Re: motorola calypso

Value depends greatly on whether it works or not. For example, I have a Coronado AM table radio from 1958 that still works perfectly and looks brand new, and as far as I know it has never been refurbished or restored in any way (except the occasional dusting lol). If it were restored, it would certa...

Rock With Bill Haley & The Comets LP Cover

Hi everyone, Talk about finding your diamonds in the rough! I was at a flea market yesterday and found a NM copy of Bill Haley's "Rock With Bill Haley & The Comets" on the Essex label. However, it did not come with the LP cover. I have tried searching eBay and other record collector si...

Re: Help me identify this Zenith Portable [Beige]

Hi Sbbn, I used to have a record player VERY similar to that but made by GE (model V631). Though they are not the best for high-fidelity or aggressive listening, they are great to take to record shows and record shops to test out records before you buy them...they're way better than the plastic junk...

Re: I Need Help With Motorola SH18N Speed Control!!

Rob, thanks for the final input! As someone with perfect pitch, I was almost pulling my hair out when I couldn't listen to my favorite records because they played back half a step too fast! The only other experience I've had regarding this issue was with a Califone, and that model was equipped with ...

Re: I Need Help With Motorola SH18N Speed Control!!

Hi folks! After tinkering around with the Motorola, I've fixed this problem! (And no, it had nothing to do with the supposed "cheapness" of the record player or VM turntable, as some people said.) What happened was that for whatever reason, when the phonograph received a motor and changer ...

Re: Original stereo 45's from the late 50's early 60's

Record-changer, I can give you a perfect example of what you're talking about. I have a 45 of Dion & The Belmonts' "A Teenager In Love" from 1959 that is in stereo. The stereo mix itself actually sounds pretty good and well-balanced (not super-wide like most stereo pressings of the lat...

Re: The Ultimate Way To Clean Your 78s

The way that this method works is because only a tiny amount of lemon oil actually gets deep enough to penetrate into the shellac...the rest of it stays on the record surface and loosens up any firm debris on the record washing with soap and water won't IMMEDIATELY rinse off. (Think of it as the lem...

Re: Where to find 78's?

There is a wonderful shop in Minneapolis, MN that has close to a MILLION 78s in stock and repairs all pre-transistorized audio equipment called VIntage Music. I regularly go in there and the owners are wonderful people.

The Ultimate Way To Clean Your 78s

Hi all, After years of experimenting with the "best" way to remove at least 50+ years of crap in the grooves of 78s, I think I have found the best method! The method I am about to describe removes every trace of dirt, dust and similar contaminants from your records and kills any sort of th...

Re: Add an Aux/Line-In to Motorola Console??

Matt, are you sure that the SK33 had a tape input when it was new? Because his console doesn't have an input for any device other than the radio and record player, and there's no third input selector option on the function control dials. If you're right, perhaps the previous owner(s) removed it for ...

Re: Add an Aux/Line-In to Motorola Console??

Hi again guys, My bad-his model is actually an SK33, not an SK22. I got the last two numbers mixed up, and the SK33 has an AM/FM radio in it. But I agree with Rob that a direct connection to a Line-In would be better, since he could also use it as an amp for, say, a tape player or portable CD player...

Re: Add an Aux/Line-In to Motorola Console??

Rob, thanks so much for the tips! I now know that a) adding a Line In jack to this player is possible, and b) it actually doesn't sound overly complicated. When my buddy bought the console I installed a new Pfanstiehl 228 ceramic cartridge for him since the old Sonotone it originally came with had s...

Add an Aux/Line-In to Motorola Console??

Hi again everyone, The magic of the 3-channel Motorola console with the (now-fixed) tripping issue continues! This time, I have a question for you all that I have no idea if it can (or should) be performed, so I thought I would ask some of the experts around this forum to get their input (lame joke,...

Re: Voice of Music 30RC Record Changer Trip Problem

Hey everyone, This issue has been solved! I looked at the manual and there was an entire page devoted to this issue. Upon removing the change mechanism, I found that the trip pawl lever was not only worn, but it had been SUPERGLUED into place (evidently it fell out at one point and the previous owne...

Re: Voice of Music 30RC Record Changer Trip Problem

Ron, I was fortunate enough to find a service manual for the VM 30RC series on eBay, and when it arrives this week I will read through it and see if it discusses this issue. Even if it doesn't, it's a good thing to have for extra reference since I have a Motorola portable from 1959 that uses the sam...
