Re: Discovered this in my basement

Dmariec,

I'd say you've got a nice gem there. Joe_DS is spot on. I would search the cellar for the lid real good! Either way congrats on a wonderful find.

Re: How Victor Made Tungs-Tone Needles --

Marcapra, I hadn't heard that about the HOTW records or that the tungsten wire was bad for records in general. That's very interesting. I have a very few Tungs-tone and Tungstyle needles. I've yet to use one actually. Since the wire is the same diameter throughout I can't see ho it could cause much ...

Gents,

What's with the cheap portables on the West Coast? I need a West Coast affiliate! :D

Re: Mystery Machine

JDS,

There's no identification on the case of yours? Just the motor huh? One would think with a machine of obvious quality the seller would want his name on it.

Welcome aboard both!

Varanid, congrats on your acquisition. The C-250/C-19 is a wonderful machine, one of the most desirable Diamond Disc phonographs.

Re: Mystery Machine

Joe_DS,
WOW, That is a stunner! I'd grab it in a minute if I could. It looks like a very well design machine, it certainly isn't a no-name cheapie!

Re: Maxonol Gramophone?

Gents,

I remember seeing that listing on E-Bay. It's quite an interesting design. That clip is fascinating! Maxonol had a somewhat unorthodox design throughout their line. Very noteworthy.

Re: Latest Acquisition

D.., Thank you, those photos help. I still can't figure out how the dratted record rack was screwed in. There doesn't seem to be any holes. The plate is numbered 36171, but it's on the red motorboard so I don't know if that's the number of the machine the motorboard came from or the cabinet? I'll po...

Latest Acquisition

Folks, I just picked up a nice little VV-210 for, if you'll pardon the pun, a song. I've started the clean up and repairs and it seems I have a hybrid machine. The motorboard, backboard/dash and horn louvers are a different finish than the rest of the machine. The cabinet is a brown mahogany, ...

Re: How Victor Made Tungs-Tone Needles --

Gents,

At some point it will be cost effective to start making them again. We'll be paying through the nose before that happens though. I tend to pass on them. Save 'em for the 10-50 crowd, at least that's how I think now-never know about the future.

Re: Cleaning Rusted Gold-Plating

Steve,

As you may or may not have seen elsewhere, I was asking for someone else. So I don't have a photo. I will likewise be facing the same problem myself soon, but I think mine is so gone there's nothing to save.

Re: Repairing Potmetal

D, Yes I was looking it over myself. I assume he's referring the "Plastic Steel" it's sold on-line at a site called grainger.com. It comes in one pound tubs. I think I'll give the JB Weld a shot on at least a part of the shell and report back. Maybe I can try the super glue on part of it a...

David,

Actually, you're the second person to say crazy glue. I'm looking for something called Devcon to try, but haven't had any luck so far.

Cleaning Rusted Gold-Plating

Folks,

I'm tying to find some info/advice on cleaning rusted gold-plated hardware on an Edison phonograph for a friend. Before he has to sand it down I'd like to find out if there's any way he can save at least some of the plating. Thanks.

Repairing Potmetal

Folks,

Anyone have any tried and true trick to stabilizing and or patching/repairing our nemesis potmetal? I'm tackling a sound-box from a Berg Artone portable. It's solid but moderately cracked.

J.
