Re: Rock-ola 448 Sluggish

Microswitches perhaps? Have you tried cleaning or replacing them?

Re: Vibrating tonearm Rockola 442

Ok, managed to look at this last night. The source of the vibrations is the idler wheel, specifically the shaft it rotates on. If I touch the top of it I can feel it's vibrating a lot. Motor shaft has no play, almost silent without the idler against it. Is there anything I can do to alleviate this? ...

Re: Rock-ola 464 plays randomly, but doesn't process selecti

I recall when ordering mine in (I live in the UK), after a little research I found that all of their 3-in-1 range, certainly the Motor Oil anyway was actually ND (non-detergent), they just stopped specifying it.

Re: Vibrating tonearm Rockola 442

I'm beginning to think my motor is shot. When I got the machine some gepetto had replaced the idler tensioner spring with a very strong one, as a bad idler repair I guess. I have no idea how long this was running like that so while I have the correct spring on it now, it's possible that it wore the ...

Re: Too cold to play my CD jukebox?

This is an interesting thread to me as I've recently had a high quality T&G shed assembled in my garden. I'll be boarding, insulating with Celotex board, installing laminate flooring and a moderate electrical hookup. I plan to kit it out as a Pub (bar) and put my Juke in there. I think I'll be k...

Re: Vibrating tonearm Rockola 442

Hi Ron, I did use the 3-in-1 "Motor Oil SAE 20wt", I've seen many a post from yourself warning against anything else. Living in the UK its impossible to find, so I made a point of ordering some in a small bottle from the USA especially for this juke. I seem to recall it cost me aroun...

Re: Vibrating tonearm Rockola 442

The idler is a new one from those great folks at Stamann so has plenty of life left in it. The frequency converter I've been told puts out a square wave, but shouldn't be an issue due to the type of motor. I also had this issue before installing it so I don't believe that to be at fault. The grommet...

Vibrating tonearm Rockola 442

As I progress with my restoration Im looking to iron out a few issues, if indeed they are issues! One thing I noticed is excessive (in my view) motor noise during quieter passages of music. I've ruled out motor grommets, theyre new and flexible, my idler is new, and Ive removed the speed conversion ...

Re: Ballast overheating

Glad to hear you sorted it. I see mains voltage in Oz is also 50hz so they will run slightly hotter than machines owned by our American cousins

Re: Ballast overheating

If the ballasts were designed to run on a 60hz supply, and they're running on a 50h supply they may run hotter than intended, this is unavoidable. My 1970 Rockola 442 had asbestos backers, but not sure if they were factory fitted as someone had changed all the ballasts for UK ones...I've now put the...

Re: "I've Seen a Jukebox."

Not sure if anyone on here watches the animated show family guy? There is an episode that reminds me of this somewhat. In a "50s" diner the manager removes a copy of The Trashmens Surfin' bird from the seeburg style jukebox and throws it away, because it's a 60s record, not a 50s one! As t...

Adjusting pickup gain level

I'm servicing my amp and will soon check the bias levels, as described in the service manual. I wonder also about the pickup levels, I have the correct cartridge but not sure if perhaps someone has fiddled with it over the years. The manual refers to a Rockola test record that should be used to adju...

Re: Solid State Tube Replacements

I also work in IT, but have become disillusioned with it, I love my old gear, though do embrace some new stuff. I think a good mix with old and new is nice, I've presently just rigged up a circuit to connect the ceramic pickup from my Bush auto changer to my main hifi rig, which is multi room. Gives...

Re: Solid State Tube Replacements

Its an interesting concept, and admirable engineering, but I wonder what the point is? I'm sure they exist for a reason, but If its a drop in replacement for a valve circuit, why would anyone want to do this? If the supporting components for valve amps are in good condition and rebuilt if needed, va...

Re: Rock-Ola 442? Worth It?

To rotate the carousel manually locate the "service switch". Its to the right of the basket / carousel and just in front of it, flip this switch to "scan" (top most position)and it will cycle the basket. "Operate" mode (bottom most position) is normal use and selections...
