What is Your Most Incredible Machine Story?

About a month ago, I happened to be visiting a friend (who knows nothing about vintage electronics) who got an RCA 45-EY-3 for $20 at an estate sale. This thing looked like it had been through an earthquake AND tornado - the case was covered in filth, had water damage to all the labels and appeared ...

College Graduation Present To Myself

Hi folks, Well, that time has come that I will be graduating college soon, and unlike the majority of people in my generation, I will NOT be graduating with tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt, thanks to smart financial planning and scholarships. Therefore, that affords me a little bit...

Re: The Fate of Vintage Phonographs/Gramophones/Records Ages From Now

Thank you, gentlemen, for your input! I'm sure once a few more decades pass, 78s/cylinders, wind-up phonographs and early tube stereos will be come to seen as interesting historical items as opposed to recreational home use devices that just happen to be old. Whether or not that's good is up for deb...

The Fate of Vintage Phonographs/Gramophones/Records Ages From Now

I was going through my record collection today, and found a record I hadn't seen in years and had totally forgotten about: a brown wax cylinder record from 1896 that has Vess L. Ossman playing banjo on it. Being that it's an artifact of such extreme age, and we can still listen to it and "inter...

Re: Is this a figment of my imagination or does this actually exist?

OK thanks so much Joe! I think that microphone was indeed what the other folks were talking about. However, I did see that someone took this concept one step further and made a Universal Record:

Is this a figment of my imagination or does this actually exist?

Hi all, Last night I thought of something that I THINK I heard of in another collecting community, but I'm not totally sure it exists. The collectors were talking about how, since a spinning record's grooves vibrate a stylus to produce sound, you could artificially replicate that by resting the styl...

Re: 16" Transcription Records

Record-changer, thanks so much for your reply! The transcription discs I have are the Standard Program Library discs from around 1957. Each record has five tracks on it, and they are just like an LP save for the larger diameter/groove width, no true lead in/out grooves, and no grooves between each t...

16" Transcription Records

Hi everyone, I have acquired a large batch of 16" transcription records from the late 1950s, as they were going to be thrown out(!) and I seem to be the only one in my immediate city with a turntable that can handle the larger size of these records. But I have one question about them that perha...

Re: Califone Mystery Hum

Hi guys, I fixed the problem - it turns out that the turntable bearings AND the motor mounts were dried up and/or loose. I have since replaced those, and the player is ready to go - no more rumbling that puts a diesel engine to shame! Thanks for your help in resolving this oddball problem!

Re: Califone Mystery Hum

OK thanks! I was thinking this issue was being caused by the cartridge; I just wanted to get a second opinion to make sure it wasn't an internal wiring problem or something that is more complex. I'm also looking at this cartridge (http://www.thevoiceofmusic.com/catalog/part_detail.asp?PNumberBase=P1...

Califone Mystery Hum

Hi all, I recently acquired a Califone 1155 record player that I want to use to digitize some 16" transcription records I own. Here's the problem, though: the cartridge on it is one that I have NEVER seen on a Califone before, and uses an LP/78 stylus that is held in place by a lockring as oppo...

Re: What Should I Do With My Edison??

Thanks Joe, I have been considering selling it on eBay but will have to find the right time to list it...maybe right before or right after the holidays when people have money to spend would be a wise move? Considering that this player has been kept in amazing shape for the past 95 years, I'd rather ...

What Should I Do With My Edison??

Hi everyone, Due to a certain family member's irresponsible financial handling, I am forced to look at selling my 1918 Edison C-150 Diamond Disc player. If it was in average, worn condition like you usually find these models in, I would probably have no issue selling it for parts. However, this play...

Autograph Record Year

Hi all, While looking through a box of records in an old game shop in Minneapolis today, I stumbled across an awesome Autograph 78 rpm record that was made by Marsh Laboratories (you know, the kind with the red checkered label border and the word "Autograph" in fancy script). I had to shel...
