When you say a pre amp must be installed for this cartridge to work, will the pre amp be an internal type? Would it be on the inside of the main amp?

I'd suspect another problem, IF BOTH of these woofers are OPEN. Highly unusal, to say the least. Either the set was driven at max volume (abused) previously.... OR - a serious fault in the amplifier, causing DC current to flow into the speakers (a big no-no). This would burn out any new speakers at...

I have a service manual but I can't find out what type the bottom speakers are, I'm guessing that they are 12". The 2 top speakers are reading 7 ohms, so I guess they are 8 ohm speakers? Will the bottom ones most likely be 16 ohm? Would radio shack have these size speakers?

Just checked the 2 bottom speakers with a multimeter and both are open

unfortunately I don't have anything I can test it in. The amp I bought to replace the original one was rebuilt and working according to the person I got it from, so hopefully it is not a bad amp.
