Columbia Viva Tonal and soft tone needles

I have a Viva Tonal 710 (or perhaps 711) and have notived that it sounds very good, but seems a tad quiet with soft tone needles. It sounds great with medium tone needles, quite bold and strong volume. Has anyone else noticed this? what about the larger models? Could it be the soft isolator or is it...

Re: 2 tone arm turntable for Edison and standard 78s?

If you have a player with plug-in heads, just get two heads and two identical cartridges, and wire one with the left channel out of phase. Now this seems prety practical. Can you recomend a good model with plug in heads and, if the cartriges you mentioned don't work with it, what cartriges you woul...

Re: 2 tone arm turntable for Edison and standard 78s?

Thanks for the replies, both of you. I am well aware of the brunswick Ultona. I would love to have one, and they do produce sounde very well, but the main problems are still present: Diamond discs with flaws that may break a diamond if I'm having an unlucky day and all of my late 78's that shouldn't...

Re: What brand of needles do you use?

Joe,

Thanks for the response. Where do you order those needles anyway? The only package I've used came with a Columbia 710 I bought.

Thanks,

What brand of needles do you use?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to know what brand of needles you all use. Further, have you found any brand to cause more wear than others? I've used Walt Sommers (Cybertigger on ebay) needles and they were the only ones I used to buy. They seem to work just fine and he has an impressive article on need...

Re: My early Amberola 30

I rebuilt my reproducer with Larry H's experimental cylinder diaphragm (it is the cylinder version of his True Tone DD diaphragm) along with new gaskets off of ebay. It has certainly helped with blasting on the louder cylinders (some of them still do, probably distortion that was recorded). I even m...

Re: My early Amberola 30

Don't worry, I know to only play blue amberols and indestructable 4 minute records on this machine! I'm glad to know that perhaps my stylus could still be fine. I'm not going to play it until I rebuild the reproducer. I still can't believe the volume that thing can out out. On the topic of not playi...

Re: Fancy case Victor type D I got for $60

Thanks for the advice. I'll take a peek at the possibility of felt washers when I decide to finish it up in the summer (when I actaully make money). Transmission fluid sounds like a good idea too. I also thought about putting some packing foam in the bottom of the case to absorb some of the sound.

My early Amberola 30

I got this just in time for college. Boy, it sure is the perfect size for a dorm room! At first (after getting into disc machines), I shied away from the late Amberola series, especially the 30, as I figured they would play poorly and, with such a small horn, the 30 would be quiet. I was very wrong!...

2 tone arm turntable for Edison and standard 78s?

Hello everyone, I have many 78s and a decent number of Diamond Discs. Some of these diamond discs are in pretty good shape, but have an issue or two which makes me not want to play them with an Edison machine (I have my reproducers in the shop waiting for decent diamonds from a new maker, they've be...

Re: Fancy case Victor type D I got for $60

Believe you me, I got some reproducers to try on this thing. Obviously, I have the Exhibition (with early round hole), but I also have a No.2 that is on my vv-240, an HMV No.4, a Juwel Electro soundbox (Basically a larger no.4), and a Gouldring Equitone with metal diaphragm. I do look forward to hea...

Fancy case Victor type D I got for $60

Some months ago, the father of one of my friends called me at school to tell me that there was a phonograph at a local rummage sale. I had him describe it to me and then asked the price. He said it was going for $50 but if I would pay $60, they would hold it for me. It sounded real so I rushed back ...
