Weird Victor Credenza find

Just picked up a Victrola Credenza today, but there's a few weird things about this one. First, there's about a 6-inch hole cut into the bottom portion of the horn wood (behind the grille), with some mounting holes, like something had been added there once. A speaker perhaps? Then someone had screwe...

WTB - 4-door Credenza grille frame (Victrola)

Need the grille frame for a Victrola Credenza, four door model, cloth condition and the finish on the wood not important. I just drove 420 miles and back again to pick one up today, and that is the only thing that is missing from it (darn it) Thanks!

Tungstone - tip diameter?

Can anybody with some Victor Tungstone needles, and a micrometer, please measure the diameter of the wire tip? I would like a definite measurement of one of these but I have never gotten ahold of a Tungstone before. I have some Tonofone needles that are similar. Thanks!

Re: Silvertone Phonograph Reproducers

I have a Silvertone tabletop model that I did some maintenance on the reproducer. There must have been some rubber attachment that went on the end of the tonearm, because the reproducer opening is way too big for the tonearm. I just used electrical tape in several layers to substitute for that and t...

Re: Homemade tungsten needles

I've softened my process a bit : ) Now I'm cutting a slot in the shaft, then just pressing the wire in the slot using either a vise or visegrips, a bit more precise and gentler than hammering it, hah. Then I put a micro-drop of superglue on the end at the base of the wire, and trim/point the end wit...

Re: Electrola

As for it slowing down, does it only do it at the end of the record, or the beginning? Does the slowdown depend on how loud the particular tracks are that are playing? Are you giving it a full winding? I have an old Silvertone portable that has only a single spring, looks like yours does too. Mine c...

Re: Homemade tungsten needles

I'm going to experiment with brass tubing also, I figured that the fact that it's hollow like your hypo needles would lighten the volume. What size wire are you using? With .006, the only problem is that I have to make them shorter than they could be with .007 (i.e. the Tonofones). Otherwise they ar...

Re: What is the correct needle orientation?

Yes I figured that since the grooves can handle a steel needle with 3 or 4 ounces on top of it, toothbrushes and other soft brushes would be like nothing to them, especially with the water and soap as a lubricant. I wash them with mild liquid dish soap and water quickly, and quickly dry with a towel...

Re: Do I have a Pooka in my house?

<<The phonograph is putting out an ultrasonic frequency that activates a remote control receiver in the TV.>> This one popped into my head too, but then I am an old-TV collector/nut too. I 'd think it would have to be a relatively old TV to have an ultrasonic remote. All of the newer TVs work off of...

Re: What is the correct needle orientation?

As far as tungsten needles go, I have a copy of an old patent for a tungsten stylus where the inventor recommended that tungsten needles be played at the highest angle possible, or practical. He basically said 90 degrees would be ideal but that it could cause the needle to chatter up and down on the...

<<Along this line, it's a good idea to clean any newly acquired record prior to playing it. I use a damp cotton cloth, moistened with sudsy water, to clean the surface, and then I pat the record dry using a dry cotton cloth.>> I wash a few of mine with mild soap and water while going around the reco...

Homemade tungsten needles

I am retiring in less than a month so in looking at my current hobbies, I've decided to try goofing around with making my own tungsten needles. Partly whim; partly because Tungstones are so expensive and hard to find nowadays; and finally because I now have a Victrola 10-50 which has the up-to-12-re...

Re: Victrola 10-50: loud motor hum

There's probably more than one cause of hum in these things, but this fixed mine. I think they are just very finnicky and sometimes you may simply need to poke and prod them until the hum is addressed. Definitely want to make sure all the bolts having to do with the coils are nice and tight.

Re: Victrola 10-50: loud motor hum

I retightened all the lug connections, and shoved a small snip of rubber between the lug strip and the coil on that side to act as a vibration absorber, nice and quiet now.
