Re: Taking Apart the Orthophonic Reproducer

Come on guys and gals, do you all mean to imply, through not responding, that no one here has done this? Here's what I've guessed: 1. Spanner type tool similar to that used on bicycle bottom brackets. I've bought one for bicycles and filed it to fit the retaining ring holes, and spread the width to ...

Taking Apart the Orthophonic Reproducer

I would like to take apart one of my Orthophonic Reproducers. How is it done? What tools, prep and techniques are involved?

Thanks,
David

Re: Extending the Exponential Straight 4-3 Horn

I assume that the math could be contained in the patents, but I don't have time to research those now. Also, I've tinkered with audio components in the past and even am using my own homemade unipivot wooded tonearms in both my 33 1/3 and electric 78 playback set-ups and they blow away anything I've ...

Extending the Exponential Straight 4-3 Horn

I'm really loving my Victor 4-3 and am thinking about adding an extension to the horn that will make it a six foot or eight foot non-folded length to achieve the low end response of the folded horns of the Credenzas without the drawback of loss of high frequency clarity that those folded horns exhib...

Re: What size bearings in Orthophonic soundbox?

Update: I had gotten the ball bearings along with my with the needle assortment order and tried installing them and they rolled right out laughing at me, so I thought that I must be missing the races that hold them. Anyway I talked with Walt Sommers last night (super nice and helpful guy) and we fig...

Re: Repairing Potmetal

Hi Joe, thanks for the response. Finances dictate that I try and eek out the most performance with the least amount of $'s spent, but boy it would be nice to have the best right off the bat. I've scored a couple of reproducers off of ebay so I'll hopefully have the back-up parts if things go wrong, ...

Re: Repairing Potmetal

I have an Orthophonic reproducer that has some cracks and I am afraid to try to dismantle it, but I'm playing with the idea of making a carbon fiber band around the circumference to reinforce it before trying to unscrew the back. This type of banding is commonplace in my musical instrument repair sh...

Re: Cleaning Rusted Gold-Plating

I restore vintage saxophones for a living and many 1920's ones are gold plated over silver plate over brass. I use a paste made from food grade diatome flour and water to clean red-rot from the brass. It works great and is very gentle on the gold plate. You might try Crest toothpaste which contains ...

Re: What size bearings in Orthophonic soundbox?

Thanks Joe! While I was waiting yesterday I turned a wooden dowel down on my lathe to make two donuts with center holes to fit in the space where the bearings would have been. I put them in with plumber's teflon tape so there could be some slip to them. Everything instantly sounded worse so I examin...

What size bearings in Orthophonic soundbox?

I've just acquired my first acoustic gramophone, after being bitten by the bug while listening to a friends Orthophonic Credenza back in the fall. Mine, a VV 4-3 with wooden horn, is not so grand but the price was dirt cheap, the motor is nice and quiet, and the few things I've played on it sounded ...
