Re: Questions about my gramophone

Strawberry is always a favourite Ron! Exploding pickles! That must have been fun...
My Dad used to do pickled onions when I was a child- he gave me one to try and I liked them, but couldn't eat them now!

Re: Planned Obsolescence and Period Upgrades / Mods

These machines are so fascinating! In this digital age we still love them, and I for one have respect for these machines that still work and can be restored and repaired! I mean, I have had computers and mobile phones that have only lasted a few years. Modern electronics don't last like old mechanic...

Re: Questions about my gramophone

You have just brought back fond memories--My Grandma was British, and fixed me an awful lot of "jam sandwiches"-- Thanks, Ron Rich That's sweet Ron! Yes us Brits used to eat a lot of jam sandwiches. In the periods between roughly 1860s and 1950s they often used to be all the poorer people...

Re: Questions about my gramophone

Sorry, I can't help you with your gramophone --but you have impressed me ! You can fix a jam sandwich ? I have seen many persons "attempting to fix" machines that could not even fix a sandwich-- Ron Rich I am very nifty in the kitchen Ron..I'm a cook- I volunteer in a socially run ...

Re: Questions about my gramophone

This should be the proper playing position for the tonearm -- http://img3.etsystatic.com/000/0/5743140/il_fullxfull.262892819.jpg (Not mine, unfortunately.) The record's surface should pull away from the needle's tip. If the sound box is positioned on the other side of the spindle, the needle will ...

Questions about my gramophone

Hello folks. I joined a few months ago and posted about my columbia grafonola 112a. I had been busy moving house and not looked at it again til now. I know it'll need a little service by a gramophone engineer but I was hoping you might be able to give me an idea of what might be amiss. I've read thi...

Re: Newbie from Britain and question

I'd say that 50 pounds for a portable such as the 112a, that's in "as-found" but otherwise good condition is well in the ballpark. It's true that prices vary, and you might find one in similar or even better condition for less, but then the question becomes, how long will you have to wait...

Re: Newbie from Britain and question

Thanks for all that Joe- read about needles and the types for loudness etc- already found some sites for Britain that do them for what I think is a fair price- 100 for about £3.50-4.00 is the going rate. I just wanted to be clear that a needle fits any gramophone- rather different to styluses! I rem...

Re: Newbie from Britain and question

I would say that if it's in overall good condition with no tears in the outer fabric cover, and the motor works okay, and the plating on the parts looks good, 50 pounds ($78.71 USD) would be a reasonable price. (A shop in San Francisco, near where I live, had one for sale for $550.00, which I thoug...

Newbie from Britain and question

Hello.I hope to be getting a Viva tonal Columbia grafonola model 112A from a friend. He moved back to the USA but is coming for a visit this weekend. He wanted to sell the gramophone before he left and it is in his friend's house (also my friend) for safe keeping. He won't be taking it back with him...
