Old portable battery-powered phonograph

by Smiley » Thu Oct 09, 2014 5:48 am

Has anyone seen on of these before? It has been in my mother's house for as long as any of us can remember. My dad likely bought it somewhere along the way. It appears to be to likely be from the 1960s, given its plastic construction and "Made in Japan" label.

I'm likely going to be selling it on eBay for my mother. First, I'm trying to find out more about its origins and whatnot, but Google seems not to have seen one of these before.

A quick internet search revealed that Webster Electrical Corp.; Chicago (IL) made several phonographs under the brand name "Webcore," some with the model name "Holiday."
But whether they imported yours from Japan branded as "Holiday" or this was just a coincidence and it was made by a different company, I've no idea. There were all sorts of transitorised stuff coming out of Japan from the late fifties. But it gives you a starting place.

"Webcor" was a BIG name here in the past--used to have a HUGE sign along the freeway about ten miles from here and the "plant", I assume, was the building under the sign. As far as I know, they were known for tape recordings, and related recorders/players ?? Ron Rich

This little record player has nothing to do with Webcor, an american company.
It's a japanese unit that was sold under many names in the 60's.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Yep, I thought that too and mentioned it as a possibility. I doubt if it's worth anything

Thank you for your thoughts, all. After posting last night, I was able to find something that looks different on the top, but has almost identical guts. http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/unknown_no ... ph_99.html

There's an ad from 1972 for one that resembles the one you have:

Good eye, Joe! I took a screen grab to add to my eBay listing. Might just help to make it that much more interesting a piece. Thanks for the link.
