micromatic sending erratic or no sound to speakers

it sounds perfect on the left side but quite a bit weaker on the right side. Then at a random time the sound will cut out completely. When it does I can touch the wires under the tonearm or the clip where the needle clips into...just that whole area basically, and place the tonearm back down and will play like it was earlier, then cut out again. Why is it doing this and will I be able to fix it?

Defective, aged cartridge.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.
