rd out carriage - Rock-ola 400 series

by russmar » Sat Mar 01, 2014 2:30 am

Ok i took the read out carriage off the mech , cleaned the contacts,on the wiper blades, the contacts themselves,
Cleaned the circuits on the selector disc, then deoxit 5
Put everything back together,
Tested, Still same problem,
took mech back out of machine
Replaced the read out carriage with a spare I had, leaned all electrical contact on that one, Installed spare, adjusted , same problem.....

Very sparatic firing of the solenoids that reset selector pins. after instaling each read out carriage
The solonoid fired once, then, nothing more after that.
Maybe I havent got this carriage adjusted properly, or maybe there is something else going on, Trip solonoid in control box maybe?
Does anyone have advice on how to adjust read out carriage, where should contacts bem, in relation to selector pins, so asto operate ???????
What am i missing, The manual, gives basic descriptions , but there is more than one thing happening here, maybe faulty wire from N02 micro switch??

anybody!!??? Any ideas????

Hi Russ,
Just guessing as I "ain't never seen such a thing before--" Is this done with a "timing circuit"--if so, is the cap good ??
As for mechanical alignment--I would THINK that the "hammer" should be centered on the pin--??

Hi Ron,This is all controlled by cams and switches.
My machine dates from 1965
No electronics in this thing LOL

Yeah, so, The hammer is centred over the pin, when the solenoid activates the hammer, which is very rarely, it resets the pin without any difficulty.
No jamming etc.

this could be a bad resistor?
A bad connector, a bad wire or contact.

unless someone can give me more insight, I guess ill have to keep at her and keep searching for mor info

Thanks
Russ

Russ,
"Timing circuits" date back well before that phono was made--done with "caps/resistors", and "relays"--

Hi
Try cleaning the contacts on the interlock relay and the adr relay, the adjustment for the read out arm are in the manual, let me know i can email or post a scanned copy

Hi Russ,
I ASSUMED that, but I posted that "just to be safe", as I know, I should know better, then to ASSUME anything !

1. What method do you suggest cleaning the contacts? I have read several methods.
Being from a pinball repair background, I usually use eraser and deoxit 5.
Anything better these days.?

2. As for adjusting the read out arm, i assume your talking about , "adjusting the small nut and bolt under the solenoid ?"
as specified in the manual?
any idea if the contact is supposed to be right up against the pin, or just adjust it until gripper is centred over record?
could you post a scan of the adjustment, just so i know we are on the same page, my manual may not be complete.

thanks for your input
Russ

Hi
I would usually use a piece of card and deoxit, i have tried to attach those pages dealing with the wobble plate and read out arm but they wont attach so pm me and i will email them to you, also i had a rockola 448 a few months ago where the selection pins had a problem with being canceled.Numbers ending from 0 to 3 were the most affected and the remaining ones were not, i could hear and see the cancel solenoid trying to cancel but it looked like it was being impeded somehow, if i moved the read out arm slightly outwards it would cancel, the wobble plate was loose on the chassis so fixing that up helped. if the cancel solenoids are not getting any power it has to be something to do with microswitch no.2, interlock relay, adr relay or the cancel solenoids themselves

Just thought I'd "point out", as a follow up--"ADR" (Attract-Delay-Relay) is RockOlaspeak for the "timing relay"

I always change all Micro switches as the originals fail eventually!
You can see what's going on easier if you disconnect the gripper motor from the gear and cycle the gripper by hand( turn the gear with your fingers ) when it gets to the point where it should reset try manually activating the micro switch in circuit ( number 2 I believe)
I have had these go intermittent and by pressing on and off a few times should show if it is dodgy, if not move on to other things in the circuit all the time looking for the reset coil to operate - the relays can be seen if you remove the side cover on the control box on this model I think- they may work with a bit more pressure on the contacts but be careful not to short circuit anything ( maybe use a wooden cocktail stick or similar).
If this is the case obviously cleaning is the cure

Good Luck

Just a followup, Gripper arm went nuts on me last night, continued past point of placing record on turntable, and kept traveling below turntable to eventually stop on or about level of turntable motor.
Then jammed and blew fuse.
Lucily, i had rmoved all records from magazine. !! :D
:0

dont know if this is a coincidence or related. :?

Hi
Sounds like a fault with micro switch no 3 or the interlock relay

just curious are the microswitches ,
such as used in 1 2 or 3 micro switch,
are they still redily available as new, or are they hard to come by these days,

Im starting to think I have a micro switch fault.
Though i still have to test adr and trip relay, although, they look like they are in great shape.

Im hoping the gripper arm incident is a fluke, but im thinking N0.2 microswitch could be at fault, at very least i would like to have a few extras kicking around.

They should be readily available in Canada and the US and also from Jukebox part suppliers in the UK,
