rock-ola 429 micro switch issue

by Punz » Thu May 30, 2013 10:05 pm

hi,

I have a problem I can't resolve with the rock-ola 429. The gripper can't return to the magazine without tripping the motor to put the third (3) micro switch in it's groove.
The gripper just put a disc on the turntable and stop when the second (2) micro switch enters in it's groove.the motor doesn't continue to let the micro switch switch to the 3th cycle.

when I trip the motor to the third micro switch, something click in the control box and when I move the tonearm to remove the disc, another click is performed for the gripper to remove the disc.

I thought it was the interlock relay coil that power the motor while it's in the second micro switch, but it doesn't seems to be the case.

Thanks
Punz

Hi
I would loosen the gripper motor and manually carry out the cycle, it will give you an indication that all the micro switches are doing what they are supposed to do. Watch the gripper motor gear and see that it slows down as the record is being place on the turntable, if it stops before you have completed the transfer, this would indicate a faulty motor. I had this problem with a rockola 432. If it doesn't slow down, the large resistor in the control box may need to be replaced. Also check the usual things -loose plug connectionsclean relay contacts and micro swithches. If in doubt i would replace them. I have seen a complete mechanism grind to a halt when some of the control box cables are just barely moved

thank you for you reply

you were right, the motor looks like it wants to move but it doesn't receive enough power.
I will try to clean contacts and find a way to remove the cap of the motor and clean it to smooth its rotation.

I will reply soon
thanks

Cleaning it might work, but usually i find i would have to replace the motor or armature, its as cheap to replace the motor, its no harm to have a spare motor, you can can check it before you mount into position and see that it operates correctly during the record cycle

I cleaned the contacts in the motor. It helped a little but I found that the cap is blocking the motor when it comes to the third cycle.
I loosen the cap and it helped to finish the third cycle and is now in play cycle.
but when It comes to the reverse mode, the loosen cap make it impossible to make the motor turn and I cant make it work without the cap because the motor will get off of the contacts while on.

I will find a way to fix it, else I will buy another one.
thank you!

hello again,

I cleaned the motor in varsol and now it's better but the gripper gears need to be cleaned too because they are kind of sticky and the 28 vdc of the motor has difficulty to make it move.

I got the jukebox not long time ago.
Instead of making another thread I will post it here.
the part "a" of a record works
but earlier I tried for the first time part "b" of a record when the gripper put the disc on the turntable the fuse blowed.
I put another fuse and it blowed again.
part a works but not part b.
the fuse that blowed is mech 28 vdc 1.6 A (gripper).

Could it be a short in the motor? (I just thought of that, I will look tomorrow)

thanks

Hi
I would say like with all rockola's which haven't been used for a period that the gripper assembly should be taken apart and lubricated, you might get away with not taking it apart and just cleaning and lubricating where it is. It may be that the gripper assembly is sticking on B sides, drawing too much current and blowing the fuse and that's why it needs cleaning and lubricating, anyway i would start there first and see how that goes. While you are doing that you may as well lubricate all the relevant parts. If you search in this forum there will be plenty of references to what type of lubricant that should be used. Brand names available in the USA and Canada are not available from what i can see in Europe or Ireland

hi again,

finally, there was a short in the motor, I repaired it.

I took apart the gripper and cleaned it and put it back.

now the magazine won't turn even though the micro switch 1 is in the groove but the turntable move and it's not supposed to.

any ideas?
thank you
Punz

EDIT: the magazine turns if I disconnect the gripper motor. It wants to turn in the same time as the magazine.
what should I check?
