Issue with my Motorola SK-29 R

by cjwebber » Sun Nov 30, 2008 3:33 am

I have had this Motorola SK-29 R for about a year now. It was a Christmas present from my girlfriend. She picked it up at a Flea Market for cheap. I only recently was able to find a couple old stock needles and got the record portion working (i've just been using the AUX input in the rear). The only issue is that the record changing function does not work.

Here's what happens:

When you stack the records and select the REJ function the whole unit vibrates and nothing happens. I can help the gear along underneath and it will function properly. I have no idea what is wrong with the mechanism and would appreciate ANY help you can throw my way.

I recorded a short video showing what goes on also:

You are going to have to pull the platter and inspect the changer tripping mechanism. I believe it is a velocity trip type. Move the arm towards the spindle and look for a paw to protrude from the gear. That's what starts the ball rolling. At any rate this changer will surely need a good cleaning and lubrication. (Note: Most velocity trip mechanisims require cleaning only. No lubrication is to be applied.) A changer model number might help though I'll be away from the 'puter for a few days. If record-changer is around he'll have some answers for you. Best. Thom

Check the change cycle parts for dried lubrication. DO NOT lubricate the trip parts.

Check the idler wheel. The rubber might be hard. If the idler wheel is slipping when the change cycle starts, the drive will slip and the turntable will stop.

Thanks for the responses. From what I can tell, it doesn't seem like any of the parts are seized. But I am going to take it apart an clean it all out.

I also am inthe process of getting a Garard at6 for about 20 bucks which I thought was fairly resonable. It does need a new idler wheel and could use a new cartridge. Do you guys have any recomendations on where to get those? And also what type of cartridge should I get?

Thanks again!!
