NEWBE Needs Help Rockola 478

by RAC85 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 4:08 pm

Hello --- am new to this, but am willing to take any and all advice -- I was GIVEN a ROCKOLA478 – I was told it worked when stored. Its been in a barn for about 10 years. After a cleaning, I plugged it in and it immediately produced a very loud hum that got progressively louder. The florescent lights come on -- and that’s it. Hum is a 'chatter' type hum. I've got the manual, and have begun working through the trouble shooting test procedures. I'm reasonably good at electronics (ham radio guy) and understand logic circuits, power supplies, TTL, l etc. I just need some help in understanding the "best" place to start looking -- nothing seems to be powering up. Any advice for testing or trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated. I hate to junk the machine, because it's all there minus what looks to be the coin accepter apparatus on the right side (and it was full of records!!). So, anyone want to offer some tips, advice, etc? Any suggesting for spare parts, boards etc would be welcomed also. Thanks in advance. Bob

Bob,
I would suggest reading the manual first--then using the manual, start checking "power supplies". The "hum" I would suspect is a bad filter cap in the amp--or it could also be a bad output tranny. SOME new parts are still available from Victory Glass, if you have the part number. Used parts are available from the "jukebox junkyards" in some quantity. Ron Rich

I own a 478, the pain of a jukebox as I call it. these units are nice but the computers are a pain. When you are inside the box ground yourself. These things we lets say not the best of rockola. I had a guy rebuild a pc boards and logic board and a few other wonderful parts a few years ago. Also the flasher voard watch it they can sort out if you bump it wrong.

RIP
Rockola Charlie

Tip the amps were sometimes swap with the wrong part. This is since rockola did not change the plug on there models. The amp should have a uk us switch on it if not it is the wrong amp.

Coin system is another odd thing with this box. To set free play you need to set the dip switch's in the right way.

My box is dead and well stay dead as far as I care. The amp is on the craps and the memory will not hold anything you want it to play.

Also check speaker hook up bar on back of the box. Speakers should be hooked to the right screw.
.

Another tip led on top hits can go bad clean the contacts with a pencial eraser.

Also these box's will warp a recored the lights are hot and not much air flow in the box.

RAC85, i have a rock-ola 478 (mystic). I have slowly been doing mine up, not sure about the acutal problem you mention, could be speaker or the amp, you didnt say if it actually worked, as in you could get credits and whether the turntable spins. Check your fuses, I had to get replacements for many of them.

RAC85 and or Troydog, Im having trouble with the selections, and im sure its my logic board playing up, do you know where i can find a replacement, or if your not keeping yours going can i buy one of either of you? Im also looking for a speaker and coin mech. I must admit i love my rockola, gives a loively base sound.

Anyway, get in touch if you can help me also, or RAC85 if you need any more advice just ask. I recently regassed my Struts which lift the lid, replaced top glass and buttons, theres loads of spares out there (apart from logic board clearly)

cheers
Nobster
