Rock-ola Model 1438 plays continuously

by Liftserv » Tue May 12, 2015 6:49 pm

Hello
First time posting to this forum, looking for any feed back on my Rock-Ola model 1438 Comet.
This unit keeps selecting records at random and plays over and over again. If you do make a selection
it will go to that selection play and then go to another selection and and then back to the one
you selected. ( I think its possessed) . I did clean some of the contacts and checked some of the
switches. Any help would be great!
Thanks
Jim (Liftserv)

Jim: it sounds like the selection pins are not getting canceled. manualy check all the pins to make sure they are not slected. see if it stops. you can then move on to your manual(i hope you have one) to check the cancel circuit. Mark

Thanks Mark I'll check, I'm presuming that they should be sticking up further than the ones that don't play ?
I was also wondering if the cancel relay could be at fault?

Jim,
I miss read this as a 1428--not 1438--in which case, Mark "hastabe" correct--pins are not being pushed back to the non-selected state--

Hi Ron and Mark
You guys hit the nail right on the head, its pretty amazing how they
engineered such a piece of equipment. Another question, your thoughts
on why the cancel coil is not resetting the selector unit?
Thanks again
Jim

Jim,
There can be several reasons for this- 1st, determine if both coils are failing--If so, possible that the plungers are frozen into the coil sleeves--possible the switch supplying power to them is dirty--and, if I recall correctly, there are slip-rings/wipers/cord, involved here, where the common could be failing ? If only one side is failing--stuck plunger, or switch that determines which coil to fire dirty--
Please comply with the PM I sent earlier-- Ron Rich
