Wurlitzer 1900 free play

by v200juke » Sat Sep 06, 2014 6:30 am

Hello Does anyone know if it is possible to free play this model (1956) without the credit unit Mine is missing so no selection can be made. I was hoping maybe a jumper plug at the mech but need to know which wires to bridge If anyone can help I would really appreciate it Thank you, Mark

mark, unfortunately it is not as simple as with the older machines. On these later models (post 1600 series) the credit unit (Playrak) has two relays that apply the pulse and deduct credits.

You can easily eliminate the subtract coils and a numbers of other connections, but from what I recall the two relays are essential.

If you want to construct a substitute assembly the first order of business it to get a comprehensive schematic of the entire machine so that you can see what plug will be needed and then find two suitable relays. One will have several copper rings under the coil. the oldest schematic I have is for the 2000 so I'm not sure if that would be useable here. Wurlitzer was making a lot of changes in the first years after the carousel mech was introduced and the adoption of 200 play.

Ebay is another source for credit units, but confirm both the juke model # and number of pins on the plug. Electrically all of the playraks can be modded to work, but if you are buying a complete assembly it may as well be a drop-in.

So, get a manual and possibly check in here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/wurlitzer/info

Thank you for your prompt reply I do have a Playrak from a newer model but has an additional pin so cannot plug into 1900 .The original was a lot bigger in dimensions but am guessing doing a very similar job. If I can figure out how to rewire this I may have a chance Cheers Mark.

Mark, do you have a schematic with pinout for the playrak? I can scan/send one for the 2000. It shows an 11 pin plug w/pins 1&10 not used.

The area of interest is at the center bottom called "coin mechanism"

Good luck

Hi I managed to free play machine thanks to Rob NYC scanning the diagram and making things a bit more clear . I have one last problem that has probably been covered elsewhere . The `A` selections do not work. When I push `A`button the contact from linkage arm is as strong as others but when number pushed nothing. One thing intrigues me on `A` contact block. There are no wires attached and by the look of brass pins never have been. I am guessing machine plays `A` by default unless B, C or D are pushed Again any help would be appreciated Cheers Mark.

The closest diagram I have is for the 2104:

On the same page are some additional photos of the assemblies and "explodeds".

Very glad you've gotten it working.

I'll check back when I get home later-on

That is correct, but a Playrack can replace it since all the functions are the same -you just eliminate the goofy "grinder" motor. For free play, you really only need the two relays.

Thanks Rob This machine had a real dodgy rewire in it`s former life. I ended up putting a microswitch behind `A` button so it will open contacts seperately and not energise driver solenoid , making the machine `think` it has to play A selections. Confused? Me too but it works. We are visiting your great country again in about 6 months and going to New York. I owe you a beer or two. Thanks again ,Mark.

What you did makes perfect sense in that "A" is the pure-play default of the selector assembly. It just should not have been necessary, some 'hole must have really mucked with it.

BTW: Along these lines, have you checked that the plugs from the keyboard are in their proper sockets on the search unit?

The next order of business is a thorough lube of that mech -unless you've already done it.

I will clean and lube the mech. It does strain quite a bit especially taking off record .I had a Wurli 2100 `with the same strain issue ,but I guess these machines are over 50 years old now.(like me) Mark. If say 1 and 2 numbered plugs are wrong way around could it cause this problem? I am certainly no expert and thought these plugs were just for A (1)B(2) C(3) D(4) groups.
