Rockola Grand Salon 468

by DoghouseRiley » Fri Apr 17, 2009 8:47 pm

This is my jukebox.
I couldn't justify buying a "silver age" model. I think demand makes them over-priced. But I like this, it looks more "restrained."

I found this "flyer" on the web, I like to think mine looks almost as good.

I'm not sure that it could quite be described as "elegant."

It's pretty much immaculate. I've had it about a month. I keep it in this summer house at the bottom of the garden. You could say that it's in another of my "prize possessions," I built it over 20 years ago.

I'd have been pushing my luck asking my wife to let me keep it in one of our two reception rooms, I've already an electric piano in there...and an alto saxophone..err..and a tenor saxophone.

Anyway, it's far enough away not to disturb the neighbours if I play it occasionally on warm evenings. You can't beat listening to some of fifty-year-old vinyls with a few beers. I love both this song and greatly admire these singers demonstrating a craft I think which has now been lost forever.

It sounds quite good since it's had a bit of a service and the turntable motor grommets have been replaced, if you'd care to listen.

I've included a look at our garden, just to give you a feel of the "ambience" I'm lucky to be able to experience since retiring...

Well you can't play golf all the time can you?

New tune.

I don't mind if you don't like my manners, I don't like them myself, they're pretty bad, I grieve over them on long winter evenings.

As you can see, the graphic above the machine is quite faded.

I've been able to purchase a new "old stock" replacement at the bargain price of five quid, which I'll hopefully fit whan it arrives later this week.

Hello Bob,

I love your summer house how long did it take you to constuct it?
Glad to hear you have sorted most of your problems on the Rock Ola.
From the look of your jukebox I would say that it may have been in private hands for most of its life, the plastic moldings on the front of your jukebox look as if they have no marks on them at all.

Regards
Alan

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your kind words.

It took me a couple of weeks, about 23 years ago. I used to get six weeks holiday a year, so I usually had a "project" each year. The previous years' to that, was a five foot deep koi pool, but with a filter in a room I built in the garage, that took three weeks, (but you don't want to go there).

It's based on some Victorian Japanese style summer houses I found in books in the library. It's made of rough sawn soft wood (cheap) which I planed down and roofing ply. The windows are opaque plastic, three per door with hardwood beading to make it look like nine windows per door. The three doors open and fold back to provide more room. It gets a coat of Dulux mahogany Woodshene every other year. I've replaced the roof felt about fifteen years ago and the "skirts" which had started to rot a bit, three years ago (They're Victorian style skirting boards) but the rest was and still is sound.
It sits on brick piles so gets a lot of ventilation.
Because the corners of the roof turn up, it acts like a "reverse wing" so any high winds just push it down rather than lift it up.
I've not done much since taking early retirement ten years ago, other than take up golf and learn to play the saxophone.

Regards,

Doghouse

The original painting from which my graphic was copied was;
Claude Monet's; "Sunlight under the poplars."

I wonder what he would have said about one of his works being used to draw attention in their time, to nearly 4,000 jukeboxes?

Probably not;

"A Wop-bop-a-looma-a-blop-bam-boom!"
