Selector Key Rejects Record

by ds100h » Mon May 16, 2016 6:06 pm

Hi
I thought this was discussed before, however I can not find it in search. Problem: Seeburg Q while record is playing, "occasionally" when you make a selection while a record is playing it appears the selector key circuit causes the reject(record cancel) function to and the record playing reacts like you actually pushed the record reject button. I can not find this issue in the trouble shooting guide to attempt a repair, so any help would be appreciated.

Not sure if this issue is anything that could damage the unit or if it is no big deal and just a small annoyance?

Best
Darrell

Hi Darrell,
That's a hard one to find--usually it's in the TES switches--need to be cleaned with ammonia ( remove TES from phono--remove latch solenoid FIRST) ! Can also be a dirty write-in contact (s?), INSULATOR. Also can be "electronics" in the TSU. Have fun !

Thank you Ron, if the Q keyboard is anything like a DS keyboard they are "fun" to remove and replace

Darrell, I have always found this in two areas;

1) Poor connections in the large Jones plugs -particularly in the ground pin #33:
http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/Rob-N ... ort=2&o=59
Another similar problem is poor ground on the shell of the RCA plug into the pulse amp. I simply run a short length of wire from these grounds on their plugs out to a spade lug and place it under a convenient screw on the chassis. This guarantees a ground.

2) Hotspot on the 12AX7 pulse amp tube. This makes a tube hyper-sensitive. The filter network in the pulse amp can not get rid of a 100% of the impulse noise from switching transients and a tube that has hot spots will conduct at the slightest trigger. The same tube used in an audio circuit will show excessive gain and serious distortion.

Thank you Rob, those two items are easier to check that removing the keyboard. Perhaps I will luck out with an easy fix :o

Hi Darrell,
Pulling the TES is a "no brainier" on the DS ?? A roll of masking tape and a nut driver--out in less then two minutes ??
Use the tape to hold the FRONT of the keys from falling inward when you remove the TES --I am 99% sure the "Q" is the same-
Hint; when re-installing it, be sure to re-install washers between the TES and hex nuts, and allow (adjust for) about 2/1000 ths. clearance between the tops of the push-button stems, and the plastic keys--a drop of graphite based grease, placed on each stem top, is also recommended --keys MUST "jiggle sideways", when TES is correctly mounted -- Ron Rich

Ron

Thanks for the hint.

Where were you several years ago when I pulled the DS160 keyboard out. Did not use tape, and took wrong screws out leaving me with a whole bunch of copper pieces (springs) that I did not even know existed, much less how to place them back in the proper position. In the end it all worked out and was a leaning experience for sure. Has worked great every since. knock on wood. :D

Your 2 minutes took me many more minutes than that, will try to improve my time this go around

Hi Darrell,
Well, the "first job" I had working in this country, on Jukeboxes, was to rebuild about 500 AY, and DS models. I got sick of them, and axked ( my great) foreman why he kept giving me this task--his answer was classic--he stated that he noticed I was the fastest one in the shop who did them--so, his theory, as he stated it was to "find the laziest man in the shop, give him the worst job, and he will come up with a faster, easier, way to do it". Seven years later, our roles were reversed at another company, I was the foreman, and he worked for me--first job I gave him--yep--rebuild a DS--He just laughed and said "paybacks are hell"--- Ron Rich

Wanting to do the least work possible to resolve this issue, I decided to change the 12AX7 pulse amp tube since there are several 12AX7 tubes in this amp to interchange. Keep your fingers crossed, it has been five days without a record reject while making a selection :D

Hi Darrell,
Be sure you don't let my "bad habits" influence you ! (sounds like they "might just be", doing so  ) Do one more thing--be SURE the screw that you are supposed to remove, in order to remove the PA, is there, and tight. Ron Rich

Darrell, unless that 12AX7 sounded distorted in an audio circuit I doubt that was the cause of the tripping. What probably happened is that in opening and closing the back door you jiggled the cables on the Jones plugs and caused better connection.

This is the stuff that would make a lesser man an alcoholic :-). Not liking booze, I opted for the extra ground leads.

Ron

What you view as "bad habits" I view as "good traits" On the railroad the saying was "don't do work that does not need to be done" and this has worked well for me :D .

Rob

You may well be right, but at this point "I am not going to fix what is not broke". If the problem resurfaces then I will do the Jones pug thing.

Thanks Ron & Rob for all the help.

Best
Darrell
