Maggie TP-266 chassis AMP-166AA help.

by listguy » Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:48 pm

I picked this sweet little blonde up at a yard sale this past weekend. I need the schematics for the amp. Radiomusem.org has an AMP-167AA listed but no 166. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe this is a 1958 model.

I need to update my Sams Index, but it states folder 417-7 is for your amp. Maybe also check out AG Tannenbaum. Your first pic threw me off with the speaker board in relation to the turntable, but figured it out. I like these old, smaller units. I know stereo came out around 1957, is this a Mono unit with that speaker lineup? If so, that is great that they went the extra mile to house a 3-way system.

I keep a little GE tube stand-alone unit by the piano and I think it dates circa 1963-1965. It's got two speakers in the main cabinet, so you can operate it without the extensions. I had to brace those to keep them from sagging. It also has an "expand" switch where I can't hear the difference, but that little section on the board has one tube (12AX7?). I would like to recap the whole unit since it's so old...and it doesn't sound bad.

In general, capacitors and tubes are marked, resistors are color-coded, transistors and other marked semi-conductors can be crossed referenced to NTE/ECG replacements. Schematics are good for checking voltages within circuits. Some values are marked on the board. Good luck in your search. --BB

Thanks Bobby. I think this was Maggies last mono before they went to stereo. The transformer in the pic is an output transformer. There is no step down power transformer, just a rectifier tube. Legs are heavy duty on this unit.

Oh my this is absolutely amazing! I have this same exact unit sitting in my room right now! I'm currently 23 years old and I've been interested in record players and 78s since I was a little kid. Other kids my age were into games and playing outside. My idea of fun was my dad taking me to antique stores and me going through rows after rows of 78s and getting old stereos (maily tube). My dad bought me this when I was in 3rd grade. Its been working beautifully for all these years. Recently however, during warmup, it makes a crackling noise sounding like white noise. If I tilt the front out and "pluck" the amp, it will stop and music will play perfectly. I've tried replacing all the tubes and going over all the wiring for the turntable itself. I would also love a wiring diagram or a place that may sell old working ones. I still can't believe I found someone else with one of these. I was beginning to think this was the last one on the planet  . Model TP266D, Syle P27731, Stylus 560187-I. So glad that sticker is still on the inside in perfect condition :D . I'll post a picture of it in the next few hours, time for me to head to work.

Makikun, Welcome to the Board!

Check out the Archives and old posts, you'll find a wealth of information there, and alot of helping hands and brains in this forum to keep you from getting FRIED and know when you are over your head with issues our old vintage beasts give us at times. An occasional issue that I have found over the years was a "cold solder joint," when I thought other things were wrong. Accidently putting some pressure on the circuit board while doing something else revealed that problem.

Instead of pulling my hair out (not much left...LOL), I would take a tooth pick or chop stick and gently press around different areas of the circuit board to hear how the sound would cut-out, misbehave, etc. As a kid, I've always been mechanically inclined (a.k.a destructive) and learned over the years. Now I now how to put things back together that I thoroughly messed up when younger.

That's great that you have an old phono like that. Now I wanna go out shopping, but don't have anymore room. :( --BB

Thanks for the welcome! I definitely intend to spend many hours on this site :) . I'll check for cold solder joints. I run into that issue a lot when I repair laptop motherboards. The RAM socket solder joints like to go "cold" in older laptops. I definitely use caution around tube amps in old consoles and radios, 120v A/C is not very pleasant to the touch. I'm proud to say I've made it more than a week since my last run-in  . Yeah, if I could go back to when I was younger with the knowledge I have now, much more would've gotten put back together!

Hey there!! I just found this place after coming across a TP-266 (so I found out) that was set out for the trash!! I am parting it out completely because the cabinet is covered with some sticky stuff on it and the finish is wearing...any takers for parts?

Nice! How much would you want for the amp?

I just found one of these in the house that my parents bought... Everything seems to be working but the needle... Can someone tell me what type of needle it takes.

Viewing that schematic I find several flaws, it's a hideous misprint.
Missing components and incorrect wiring.
They musta had a hangover that day.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.
