How do I get my Rockola 445 to play small hole 45s?

Reading back through everyone's posts, I notice that Ron and Pete are both suggesting (If I am reading correctly) that the long rod - part #38, the Drive Rod - and part #36, the Bell Crank - are somehow involved in the movement of the sliding slotted part. Unfortunately, I can't see how these are physically connected. Is there a spring, a bolt, a stud...something that may physically connect the parts that is either missing or is broken? If so, it's not apparent from the diagram I attached.

Again, the drive rod is under the turntable mounting plate, so it is really difficult to get under there and see what is going on.

I'm wondering if the little rod attached to the end of part #22 - which causes the sliding slotted part to move - should link into the small slot of part #36 as it moves underneath the turntable mounting plate. At present, it does not. I can clearly see part #36 move underneath the mounting plate as the record selection/rejection process occurs, but the slot is empty. Could this be the problem?

George/Pete - perhaps you could look at yours and advise if the little rod on part #22 (the Sensor Riveting Assembly) is linked into the small slot of part #36 (the Bell Crank).

I will try to get some close up pictures of how the parts connect together for you.

As you say its a little difficult to see under there, but will see what I can do.

We're almost there I think!

There is a small rod sticking down from
What we're calling the"sliding thing with long slot"
This goes into the oval slot of the #(36) bell crank.

The key is if that rod is there or broke off
Maybe? There are two rivet looking points on the
Sliding thing, the rod should be under the one
Nearest part#(13) lifter bracket.

I experimented on my machine and took off
Part #(22), just one tiny c-clip and small spring,
Lifted right off. My juke now plays my 33 1/3 small
Hole records at 45 rpm!

Please refresh my memory--since I do not have a machine to look at---
With that item removed, do the three red plastic parts on the TT return to the up-right position after playing a small hole record ?
If so, when does this happen--I assume just after the record has been lifted off --correct ? Thanks ! Ron Rich

Yes, it still works as it should. Part (13) lifter
Bracket works every time juke is played. It drops
And then raises up at end of play as record is ejected.

This is independent of part #(22), or of red turntable
Sensor. If sensor is down it raises it, if it's not it
Still goes thru it's function.

The lifter bracket(13), is already down and out of way
When the small hole record hits the three pronged red
Sensor. That is why almost no pressure is needed to drop
Sensor which hits part #(22) which clicks over to start
33 1/3 process.

While I can't see the rod you are speaking of, I can feel it. Lo and behold...it's NOT connected to the sliding slotted part (I wish this had a proper name). Curiously, this rod is not shown in the schematic parts diagram, which is why I never even considered looking for one. It's presence does explain why the sliding slotted part moves back when the record is rejected, because the hidden rod is pushed back by the Bell Crank.

I'm pretty sure we've found the problem. All I have to do now is figure out a way to get that small rod in the oval slot of the Bell Crank. Any suggestions? I'd rather not have to remove anything from beneath the turntable mounting plate (it's really hard to see under there).

You're a genius! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! My jukebox has successfully played it's first small-holed 45 (at least since I've owned it).

With a little bit of pressure and a trusty pair of needle-nosed pliars, I was able to get the sliding slotted part's rod into the Bell Crank's slot...and presto! Problem solved.

Unfortunately the 45 plays at 33 1/3...so now I have to look back through your posts to see how that's done. Removal of part #22 (the Sensor Riveting Assembly) I think you said...

Checking under my juke again , the rod i'm speaking of is
Definitely under that sliding thing with long slot.

Looking down at "slotted thing" it is on the top left
About a third of way down, you should see a little
Rivet that is in a indention. Underneath you should have
A little rod.. From looks of it, it is just floating free in
The oval notch of #(36) bell crank.

Now, there is a rod also on the bottom of part(22)
Make sure this is not the rod your finding.

To get the bell crank notch over to the right rod
I would undo the drive rod from either end.

Since your last post I was able to remove part #22. As you said...easy; simply remove the c-clamp and lift off...no more 33 1/3 speed.

I am so happy right now...I think I'll load my jukebox up with small-hole 45s. Ebay UK here I come!

Thanks to everyone for your input and suggestions; because of you my Rockola 445 is multi-functional yet again (and saved me about $50 for a record-dinker).

I have another jukebox question...but I'll post it in another thread.

Glad you "got it"--now you know why the person(s?) that wrote the R/O manual called those parts "riveting"--
Watch out for the (R/O, once again) manual that tells you to "unloosen" a screw---

I noticed the abundance of rivets...dear God - they really didn't want things coming apart easily, did they? Fortunately for me I didn't have to resort to prying any riveted components apart.

There may be a reason for using rivets rather than welds--I heard somewhere along the line that Mr. Rockola invented a few types of "quick fasteners". I don't know if that included rivets, but I have been told he invented "Pal Nuts", and owned the company that made them, plus other fasteners-- Ron Rich
