Just acquired this nice little gem and it is working just fine and pulling in quite a few
stations even in my fringe area.

It has one rather annoying item that I am wondering about. The tuning meter seems to quickly move back and forth, almost in sequence to the audio signal. I am wondering if this is normal or if something is amiss? Possibly these early meters did this? I seem to remember something about "damping" on some meters. Does anyone else have one of these that experiences the same phenomena? The meter appears in the circuit right in the first stage so maybe this is normal for this placement in the circuit? It still does definitely indicate signal strength but am wondering if there might be a way of improving this.

Old original wax capacitors will show these symptoms.
The filters will too.

Filter caps have been replaced and other electrolytics. But, I'm hoping someone else that has one of these may comment on whether this meter functioning the way it does is normal or not. The sound is crisp and clear and the tuning function works just fine pulling in all kinds of stations close to each other on the dial.

I have seen "tuning meters" react in this way before--not knowing ANYTHING, I ASSUME, it could be designed to react to either the "carrier" , or, as in your case, the actual signal strength of what ever was being broadcast, on that station? Ron Rich

Is it on multipath (some HH Scott tuners had this).
