Zenith X960 Restored

by Thom » Sat Jul 26, 2014 2:58 am

So I finished my Console project and I am very happy with the results. It was a full restoration with all new e-caps, 4 new transistors

(two tested bad so I replaced all four in the push-pull configuration with a matched set to maintain balance), new crosover caps, new

motor mounts and a new belt and of course a new stylus. The changer was cleaned and lubed. I cleaned the cabinet then applied Howard's

Restore-a Finish and followed up with Butchers Amber Paste Wax. The legs were damaged so I had to take them apart and reglue all the

joints. She had been used hard and a little abused from the looks of things but she found a good home here. The sound is phenomenal

and really rocks the house. The inaugural album was Dean Martin - Gentle On My Mind. Now, if I had any complaints it would be that for

the $1000.00 one would've shelled out for one of these babies in 1967, Zenith failed to include a changer muting switch!! Hard to

believe considering the room shaking thumps this baby can produce during the reject cycle when the volume is turned up. I may consider

engineering one for it in the future but for now I am simply going to sit back and enjoy it. :D

Nice! :-) Have you taken any video showing that baby in motion? That seems to be very popular on YouTube these days...

I haven't decided if I want to post a video yet. Looks right at home in my 1962 split-level. :D

Thom,
Very nice!!

Any chance you can steer me towards a schematic or service document? I recently acquired one of these myself. It's mostly working with the exception of the stereo lamp and the tuning cable/indicator sticking halfway across. The turntable drive is not functioning correctly either. It has a belt and the motor shaft spins, but the idler doesn't seem to turn the belt spindle. It appears I need to open the back up to lift get the turntable out.

Thanks for any help. I'm also a big fan of Restore-A-Finish.
Steve

Hey steve-
Any chance I can get the schematic for the zenith x960 from you as well? I'm working on replacing the capacitors for one of these, and could use the schematic if you have it. Thanks!
