Repairing / restoring a 2-spring mechanism

I was given a Solophone phonograph by my father-in-law and have just started trying to clean it up. I was able to remove all the working part and clean off all the old grime and have put it back together again. Everything that is supposed to turn now turns freely, however neither of the hooks inside the spring barrel are catching on their respective springs - so I get no power. The hooks look a litle warn, but I have no experience of what they should look like. Are there any tips or trick to get the spring to catch, or am I just experiencing a well-used mechanism?
Also, any links or guidance as to how a 2-spring motor works would be appreciated. I can see how one spring is directly wound and how the second transfers any stored energy into the drive gears. However how does the energy transfer from one to the other (through the casing?), and why this is better than a simple clutch-type mechanism.
Thanks for your help
