Rowe R86 gas springs

I've been having a good time with this restoration I managed to get the sound working, cleaned a lot of the years of smoke from the interior and exterior and even changed the lock on the front door. Now it's time to change the gas shocks. I know these are available from John Durfee but for the price he's asking for two I can buy four from most other sites. The original springs were marked with GS Gas Spring Corp, 40714903. Can anyone tell me how much the pound force is on these springs? Maybe someone knows how to read (decipher) this part number. Or maybe someone has had to replace the springs on their R86 and didn't get them from John Durfee. Sorry for rambling on but I hope someone can help.

Hi Ron,
I found just the opposite--buying springs of unknown values is VERY risky, on those Row/AMi "plastic" doors. If too strong, they WILL ruin that door ! I thought John's price for "exact" springs to be competitive to what I was able to purchase at the Auto parts stores, before John supplied them--

I agree with Ron Rich. I also have found that John is honest and goes above and beyond to satisfy a customer, I have ordered sevral items from John. On one occasion, after two months the parts never arived. John mailed me the parts a second time at no charge! Several months later the first package showed up at my house. I mailed these back to John as I had not paid for these duplicate items. I continue to do business with this fair and reasonable man.

That being said, I have an NSM Pesige II that I needed gas springs for. Here is the only place I could find that could identify and supply the correct shocks for my Prestige II.

Thanks to Ron Rich and ds100h for the great advice on where to by these springs. But my question went unanswered. I was asking what the weight or force value is on these gas springs. I'm fully aware that the wrong force would do damage to the door and I figured that not enough wasn't going to hold it up also. So my question remains, what is the force required to hold the door up? Surely someone with a lot of experience with Rowe boxes should know this, that's why I asked the question here and not on Wurlitzers site.

Many times that information is stamped on the gas spring, but, it is usually coded. The link I provided can usually give you that information as they manufactured the gas springs for many of the juke boxes.

I have never seen that information in any of the manuals I have for Rowes.

Sorry can not answer your question, can only provide info where you should be able to obtain the info you are seeking.
