Ami remote volume controll.

Hello,
I currently have a rock ola 484. I am thinking af buying a ami continental from someone and he doesn't have a remote volume controll. Either that or I'll look for a f or g.
On my rock ola, I have a volume motor that has a motor inside and a switch outside.

For the ami jukes do I just need the external switch and bypass the on back volume controls or do I need a unit inside? Which remote volume is correct, is it pretty much the same brown ami one found everywhere or does the g f or continental take a different one.

Thanks
Ed

Just remove it from the back wall of the phono--extend the wires, and you have a "remote control"-- Ron Rich

I know of a local place that most likely has a pile of remote boxes. I would prefer to use one of these but I don't know what I'm looking for when I go there. Unless all ami controllers are the same.

They are not "all the same" -however the amps made beginning in the early 1960's can often use later controls.

The Continentals used a 5k-ohm volume pot. Earlier mono models such as F & G used 35K-ohm. Then beginning with "L" through the CD models a 10K-ohm is used.

In all cases the remote cancel is just a momentary contact button.

From at least the "L" -possibly a model earlier, they all looked basically like this overpriced one:

Once you decide what machine it is for, bring an ohm meter when sorting out the RVC's. You will likely have to wash it out before using it, they are generally noisy and intermittent.

Thanks rob,
And basically to hook it up I would disconnect the current volume controll and pass it through the rvc? And e cancell I just need to parallel.

Ed, that is correct.

Hi Ed,

Rob is correct in what he says regarding the Ami and Rowe Ami controls. The 10K log pot was used on all of the Rowe Ami jukeboxes from 1963 this however could be a single or dual control dependant on which pre amplifier was used. The Rowe Ami controls were wired as a five wire screened cable and included the reject usually in a six or 7 core screened cable whether the pre amp required a dual pot or not.

Take for example the R-3788 pre amp this only required two cables on a single 10k log pot.
The R-3805 pre amp however required a 5 wire hook up to a dual 10k log pot and one of the cables needed to be screened.

That point that Alan Hood touched on is important. If you buy any of the Rowe-AMI stereo machines before model MM-2 the RVC must have two pots for stereo operation.

Some operators wired the input mono (from the pickup) and used the stereo amp as two separate mono amps to feed two different zones. There you would just use a single pot for each zone. This was a built-in option in the later record and CD machines.

I stopped by a place and found a rvc for 12 bucks, it's a special one designed for 2 zones. It has a double knob in it. And measures at 10k, but I should be able to use his for stero since the knobs stick together well, and a little more resistance wont kill it. If I throw a 5 k in parallel it might also work.

Ed, if you have a mono Continental that is -one- 5K ohm pot. There is no harm in trying a 10K but the loudness curve might be different.

Since you have a ganged 10K you could also just parallel them for 5K.

I should have mentioned. I'm getting a continental 2 stereo. It will work but I will keep looking for a correct one. Or I could just take the pot out and replace it with the right one. The plastic is perfect and I will just use the inner or outer knob.
And it looks cool.

Follow up.
I got 3 dual volume controll pots from mouser. I beleive they cost me about 5 bucks each. One went into the in cabinet volume, the other into the rvc. Both are working, I still need to get the correct shielded cable for the rvc. I get a pop with song changes when it's hooked up.
The third rvc I plan on mounting to a gear motor and a torque limiter out of a copier and Ming my own motorized volume. Then I don't have to worry about the wire.
