I bought this small, cast-iron phonograph this weekend. There are no obvious identifying labels or stampings. Though it resembles a Vanophone - there are obvious differences. Any ideas???

It plays - though a small chunk is missing out of the pot metal tonearm and the reproducer has been rigged just a bit.... Any help appreciated - thanks....

I noticed the video link you posted on the TM forum -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpNFHjP-ZLM

I'd say that's an exact match. As you pointed out, the one you have has a modified tonearm--a repair done to replace the cracked original, while repositioning the sound box to play standard lateral cut 78s. It's definitely not a Melodograph or Vanophone model, but could have come from the same factories.

Since there are no markings, I'd support the theory that it was a premium model, or give-away promotional item, probably from around the mid to late teens, when vertical cut records were still popular.

Thanks..... A guy who commented on the You Tube video stated he thought it could be converted to play laterals.... and that "U" adapter is cast aluminum - perhaps made for that player? The index pins all match the cutouts. Anyway - after a good lube it plays well and will just make it all the way through a 78 of appropriate vintage...... though I think it was meant more for the vertically-cut 7" records produced by Melodograph..... Sure wish I had one of those!!!
