Columbia Grafonola or not Columbia Grafonola?

by dalle » Sun Feb 23, 2014 8:13 pm

Hi
I am not able to find this model, then I am wondering if it is a fake...
The Columbia logo seem original and old as well as the metal label.
Can someone please help me to know which model is this one?
Thank you in advance!
Andrea

No, that's a real one; a circa 1928/1929 Columbia (Viva-Tonal) model 133a, as illustrated and described here:

SEE: http://sounds.bl.uk/Sound-recording-his ... 988-0001V0

This phonograph incorporates the "Plano Reflex" features--unique to the UK models. Note the flattened corners at all of the bends of the tonearm and horn. The theory was that sound would be "reflected" from the flattened areas in the same way that light waves are reflected from angled mirrors, resulting in an undistorted sound wave or "beam of sound." In spite of the design's quasi-scientific origins, these were remarkably effective gramophones.

Here's one in action -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz19Jocrsjw
(It's a different model, but probably dates from the same period, with the same size horn.)

HTH,
Joe
