rubbing stylus bar on edison reproducer h

by hggultek » Wed Jan 31, 2007 11:16 pm

sometime ago i bought an edison standard d with reproducers c and h. but nowadays i have a rubbing problem with the h one. when i start to play a blue amberol, for example, i hear a rubbing/brushing sound. i look through aside and closer, yes, the stylus bar rubs the cylinder. but not on all the cylinders. what can the problem be? does it need an adjustment? or is the stylus getting poorer? thanks.

Many blue amberols are slightly out of round, which will cause the rubbing sound you describe. unfortunately, I dont think there is much you can do about it, other than upgrading the carry arm and getting a diamond B reproducer. If this problem has only started recently, on cylinders that used to play ok, you may have a model H that is made of pot metal, that has swelled and thrown something out of alignment, and a brass reproducer might improve on the problem, but I've heard a few people say they have the same thing happen with H's and blues. A diamond B really is the best way to go for BA's.
