Connecting external speakers

I have an astro sonic with external speaker connections. I have played with it with the switch in the "both" position and I can't figure out how to get the external speaker to work. Using normal two wire speaker wire how would one connect the external speaker?

Do both of the external speakers work if the knob is set for "external"?
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.
