speaker amd amplifier configuration

by clones » Tue Nov 05, 2013 7:01 pm

Hi
I have renovated a jukebox and installed a wall box inside the machine integrated with a ipod, i am using a modern amp in the set up and making use of existing speakers i have spare, on each side (L & R) i have a 16 ohm tweeter wired in parallel with a 6 ohm woofer. This should give me a load of 4.3 ohms on the left and right channel. The amp can accept loads of 4 ohms and higher . My question is when i wire the speakers up to the amp, in my mind i am bringing a load of 4.3 ohms to the left and and 4.3 ohms to the right channel connections of the amp, is that correct, or when an amp specifies 4 ohms is it the total load going to left and right channels or just the load going to each individual channel, hope this makes sense

Clones,
That's sorta a "chicken/egg" question---
Seems that every "audio engineer" has his own way of "measuring", which also varies depending on the day of the week, time of day, or night, and mood of his "better half".
Try it--run it at top volume--if not"distorted, and or, "clipping" and the amp is not "overheating", most likely it is OK--

Ron
Thanks, was going to go down this route anyway, the whole thing of speaker set up seems to be sort of black art depending where you look, hope nothing blows!

The 4+ ohm connection per channel is OK.

If you are using -any- of the original speakers DO NOT run a modern amp into them at full volume.

Those original amps had, at best 12 watts/ch and the deep bass was restricted in the tone shaping in the amp. A regular stereo amp will not have those restrictions and that, along with probably higher power will blow the originals out of their baskets.
