Rockola Super Sound Help!!

Group,

First time poster here so bare with me - I picked up a Rockola Super Sound well over 5 years ago and the family and I have really been enjoying it. The hunt to find good 45's has been challenging and very rewarding. Anyway, the machine has worked flawlessly for years until last week. I turned it on and everything seems good, it played a record and when the record was done, the turntable stopped. Everything else appeared normal, no smoke, no error tilts, just no turntable. I turned it off and did a quick inspection and everything looked good. All fuses were visably good. When I powered it back up I could hear a buzzing noise and I noticed the Play Relay on the power supply was arching. I decided to order a new relay hoping that was the problem. I put the new relay in this morning and am getting the same issue. The relay is arching and turntable is turning very slowly. All 4 LED's are lit on the power supply. I'm guessing this is certainly a power supply issue and was looking for some help to either purchase a kit to rebuild my unit or send it out for repair or replacement. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

THanks,

Mike V.

Thanks for the quick reply - I must be blind because I didn't see the attn:newbies post you were referring to. Here is the info:

Supersound 1 Model 490 - The Relay in question is the only one on the main power supply and it's labeled Play Relay. I hope this info helps.

Thanks Again

Mike V.

Let me update this - I did find the newbie post and I get it. I've got a lot of years experience in Video game repair and pinball but I have zero experience with the jukes. I know it's a whole different animal. That being said, I'm interested in digging into this problem and learning something. Thanks for you time.

Mike,
I would advise that you purchase a service manual package for that model--see above "stickies"--
An arching relay contact, and or "buzzing relay", is not good, and the reason needs to be determined, by using the schematic. Ron Rich

Mike,

One thing you stated sticks out in my mind, "turntable is turning very slowly". That should be a 120v motor. Without the benefit of a schematic or knowing much of anything about that model, it seems odd that it would go from not turning to turning slowly.

Have you checked that motor to make sure it's able to turn freely and properly lubricated? I'm thinking that if the motor was beginning to seize it could be drawing a lot more current, which could cause that relay to chatter. You could try to unplug the motor and see if everything else comes back to life.

Just a thought...

Mike. Nelson,
I don't think the motor can cause the relay to do that. The motor is on the 117 vac line, and the relay should be low voltage-- However, you might check that the 117 is good ?? Ron Rich
