Seeburg 222 Speakers

Hi. I have to replace the speakers in my Seeburg 222. Is it ok to use 8 ohm speakers or do I have to use 16 ohm since that's what already in there? I've heard a few different stories so I came here for the proper answer. Thank you!

If you use 8 ohm they will try to consume twice as much power as the proper 16 ohm and thus overload the amp.

You can get away with it if you set the wattage tap to "8 watts".

There is also the problem of likely having to remove the existing speaker connectors and the chokes in the crossover box (center of cabinet) will not have the proper rolloff point if you decide to switch them in.

In 1986 I bought a 222 that consisted of: wood cabinet, metal glass frames, mech and keyboard. Nothing else. Over the next three years I assembled suitable parts and among what I used were two 12" from an LPC. They were 16 ohm and had proper connectors. The LPC speakers probably have a different response curve, but had very good efficiency and when I added horn tweeters the machine sounded excellent.

I suggest using 16 ohm. They can be from any of the tube era machines that used 12" -R-J-V-VL-K-L-201-161-Q-AY-DS.
