Seeburg STD4

by Benny26 » Mon Mar 03, 2014 1:52 am

I recently took on a new project. I am having alot of fun seeing how all of this works. I bought a STD4 model and nothing worked. Well now I have everything work minus one important item. It will not eject the record and go to the next selection. It plays both sides great but just will not eject. I have lookes at alot of possible cause but I might be missing something. Any ideas from anyone. Things I should check out.

Thank you
Ben

When I first got my SMC the magnet was under the mechanism, a bit of tacky glue solved it n

Hi Guys,
For sure, see the late, great Tony's site--(BTW--he used my {wife's} photo's - with permission there) !
One thing I would add, at this point in time--the magnet MUST be re-glued in the same N-S orientation --North being "up", or "intermittent operation", may result. Ron Rich

I did check the magnet and its still glued on there. Is there a test I could do to see if the pickup is bad?

Benny,
You mean the "switch", not "pick-up" ?
If so, yes--play any selection and press the reject button on your service switch assembly. If it mutes, AND, rejects, suspect the magnetic switch, or wires connected to it.

Sorry I meant the switch next to the needle arm. Yes the magnet is there. And the reject but on the service switch doesn't work. I think I will start chasing wires.

Benny,
Are you using the "reject" or "reset button" ? BTW--One hopes a Seeburg, or any other phonograph, "Na-VER" "ejects" records !! Ron Rich

OK--most often this is caused by the smaller plug on the amplifier ( Marked "mech. or mute"). The female contacts become "sloppy" and fail to carry current. A quick check for this is,while playing a selection, is to hold the reject switch closed with one hand and "wiggle" that plug around with the other hand. If, when doing so, it rejects the selection--the plug is your problem. If it does NOT do so, remove the plug (cap) and short out all connections for a second, in that plug. If it now rejects, the problem is either that plug, or internal in the amp. If it still fails to reject, problem is in the switch stack on the mechanism-- Ron Rich

Benny,
Great !! Glad you got it--
Amazing, how a lever like that can "jump", all by itself, into the wrong position--
Will wonders ever cease ?? Ron Rich
