looking for info on an unusual portable electrola

by sara mosey » Tue Oct 15, 2013 5:07 pm

Hi, I recently found an early portable Electrola gramophone. It looks like an hmv 101 but the crank is on the front. The strange thing about this is that it has a globe logo with the German words- alle klange der welt, die welt aller klange. No regular rectanglular Electrola logo. Fairly ornate and the whole machine is in working order. I havent been about to find this logo on anything online thus far and would like to have more info on it. Also- the small metal plate next to the arm says PJ Tonger, Hof-musikalien und insturmenten handlung, Koln a. Rhein. I have figured out that it is an Electrola Gesellschaft model (no.4) but if you could help me out with more info that would be great. I have compared it to museum pics and haven't seen this labeling anywhere. Thanks so much!

Hi Sara:

I've seen the globe logo appear on some Electrola record labels, for instance:

FROM -- http://grammophon-platten.de/e107_plugi ... c.php?5431

A rough translation is, "all the sound of the world, a world of all sound."

"PJ Tonger, Hof-musikalien und insturmenten handlung, Koln a. Rhein" would be the name of the music store that sold the portable. It roughly translates to:

PJ Tonger,
Cologne, Rhein
Musical Instrument distribution/sales

PJ Tonger was also a major music publishing house.

This is, indeed, a very early model, probably dating from late 1925/early 1926. (The first series HMV 101 portables also had the crank positioned in the front of the cabinet.) Hopefully, someone will chime in with some information concerning how long the globe logo was used.

By the way, I also spotted this ad, sold on eBay, which shows an illustration of the Electrola portable with the round globe logo:

And...an Electrola "model 109" table top gramophone, circa 1926, showing the globe logo appears on this page --

Hope this helps,
Joe

Hi Sara:

Many thanks for posting back. As you note, there is very little online about Electrola GmbH. I spotted a question similar to the one you posted about the globe label on a German forum. Here's the translated version:

(Original Page: http://grammophon-platten.de/e107_plugi ... c.php?5431 )

Based on the information provided, which I've no way to confirm at this time, the "Globus-Label" appeared on the company's very early products until about 1926 or possibly 1927.

I found mostly German pages in my search also. But your information has been very helpful. This gramophone has definitely been an interesting find. I just picked it up at a garage sale and I have been mildly obsessed with finding out information on it since then. Thank you for taking the time to help!
