Wurlitzer P-500

Hi, I am helping a friend with his Wurlitzer P-500. It has the keyboard style of mechanical selector. He has the early type of service manual printed by Victory Glass before they did the spiral bound type and isn't much help.
Here's the skinny. Without a selection key depressed, powering up the motor and letting it run, it will go through the records like it should. The problem centers around the starwheel and dogbone. No selection made and mech running, the dogbone falls perfectly into the starwheel. If a selection is made, the dogbone falls too low regularly, catches the point of the starwheel jambs the mech and bends the starwheel. The screw and locknut adjustment for travel of the sector gear has no effect.
Here's what I noticed, the sector gear is fiber and seemed really floppy, side to side.
Here's what we tried, we took a 1015 cast sector gear and adjuster, swapping them with the original fiber one. Now, there is no more sideplay, but the mech acts the same way.
We also have a starwheel from the 1015, we haven't tried it, but the fingers are a hair bit longer. Doing some research, I found that all 24-play Wurlys use the same stargear. Maybe that is the problem?
Next, I noticed that the fiber drive gear is worn and although it doesn't skip, it has what I would call excessive play in several spots between it and the metal worm gear. Could this be causing the problem?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan S.
