I have been so interested in actually hearing good orthophonic sound on a Orthophonic machine. I don't have alot of room, so I was thinking about a VV 1-90, but these are so hard to find, is this a really rare machine?

According to "The Victor Data Book," by Robert Baumbach, surviving Victor records indicate that 22,351 were shipped. Paul Edie, on the Victor-Victrola Page (http://www.victor-victrola.com) gives this a two-star rating for rarity, with one star being common and four stars being very rare -- see: http://victor-victrola.com/1-90.htm

Nonetheless, I've only seen a couple 1-90s come up for sale on eBay over the past five or so years, and the only one I've seen in person was at an antiques mall in Minnesota, back in the early 1980s.

If you have the room, you'd probably do better with a Consolette, or a VV-4-7--both of which take up minimal floor space, but pump out an amazing sound for their size. (Because of its folded horn design, the 4-7 provides a stronger impression of bass than the Consolette.) You can check them out on this page -- http://victor-victrola.com/new_page_2.htm In terms of price, these would probably come in less than a 1-90.

If space is really a problem, another option would be a good condition VV-2-55 portable, or better yet, an HMV 102--equipped with a #5a or 5b sound box. Both are fitted with small, though very efficient, exponential tone chambers and Orthophonic style sound boxes. You'd be amazed at the volume as well as fullness of sound you can get out of these.

BTW, there were a couple of HMV (Orthophonic era) table models produced into the 1930s. (I don't have my Gramophone book handy, but perhaps someone could provide model numbers?) As with the HMV 102s, they were fitted with small exponential horns and #5-series sound boxes. Unlike the 1-90, which used a small folded wood horn, these are equipped with metal horns that provide a room-filling sound.
