Coin Rejector rejects nickels

Hi folks - I picked up an original coin rejector (was missing) for a 1949 AMI B I started restoring. It takes dimes and quarters fine, but kicks out the nickels. Generally speaking, Are the National rejectors manufactured to accept only certain coins, or are they designed to be changed/ modified? The coins drop through too fast for me to really understand what's going on inside! Thanks,Carl.

Carl,
That rejector was probably modified to return nickels, when the price was raised from 5 to 10 cents per play.
How, it was done, is the $64k question ?--- Ron Rich

Hello Carl,

Take out the coin mechanism and the frame and try the coins through whilst on the bench.
You may find that some coins go through rockers and you can hold these to slow down the operation (this can of course alter the path the coin takes) you may find that the mechanism has a third path down the back of the mechanism that does not have a rocker but measure the coin diameter and thickness, if this is the case then alteration of thickness or size on the path will cause the coin to reject.

Hi Alan, and all,
Regarding the rejector that will not accept nickels--it was common here to stop the acceptance of nickels, when the price was increased to 10 cents--Unfortunately, every "hack technician" found a different way of doing this. I have seen things "bent", string, or wires added, holes drilled, with screws inserted, to accomplish this. I can, with a little patience, make MOST of them work, but not being able to see, or have it in my hands, it is almost impossible to describe. Ron Rich

Hi Ron,

I totally agree, its a bit like how credit clocks were altered for bonuses etc, I have seen engineers cut out teeth to get the results they wanted rather than do it the correct way.

Alan and Ron -
Thank you for the input. I'll put the rejector back on the bench and look closer at where the nickel is going. If I understand you, it seems that all the units were originally designed to accept nickels, and it's only rejecting them because it has been altered in some way? That answers my original question. I wasn't sure if this one even had the capability to accept nickels. I'll look for alterations, gummed up, etc. Thanks again. Carl.

Thanks folks - I got the rejector to accept nickels, at least sometimes. There was a lever that was hanging up. Carl.
