SMC1 Amp Rebuild?

by FrizzleFried » Tue May 17, 2011 6:31 pm

I am starting to notice a few things with my SMC1. First off, I can hear excessive "rub" noises from many records... almost as if the trench is too deep and you can hear additional "rubbing" almost as if the sides of the channels are rubbing the needle.

I also am getting excessive static that will "roll" in.... then "roll out".... I notice I can sometimes make the static stop by "flicking" the bass/treble switches.

And finally... I will notice sometimes it seems as if my "loudness" goes away... sort of "rolls" away like the static does...then it will return as well but usually a little more sudden...not so much a roll.

My guess is that I need to re-cap the amp?

I notice there are CAP KITS available... I notice one for $40, one for $80 and one for $95.... why the huge price difference? Victory Glass is the $80 and Vern is $95... what is the difference between these two kits? No one seems to want to answer my specific question of "What does your kit include"... I get generalities or no answer... i've not come across any hobby/community as "tight lipped" as this one. Hell, even Pin guys are more generous with their information...

>sigh<

Oh... the $40 kit is from these folks: http://www.jukeboxfridaynight.com/kits.html

I can only guess that Vern/Victory include more parts than these folks? I just wish they'd explain EXACTLY what they include.

Sorry, I can't tell you what is in anyone's kit, as I never purchase kits for that model amp--I stock all the parts "bulk", as I rebuild them, "all the time"-----Vern's kits generally contain "every" cap listed in the parts list.
Sounds to me as if you have needle problems, as well as amp problems also-- I do not think it's "just caps"--

I bought both kits ( receiver and amp ) from jukeboxfridaynight and they included all the caps needed ( except of the stepper caps ) and some resistors.

just noticed that the kit from jukeboxfridaynight is a electrolytic kit, the others are cap kits. don´t know the difference but that may be the price difference.

"Electrolytic" is one type of cap--that amp uses at least three types of caps--and USUALLY, it's not a cap problem causing his symptoms. I suggest that anyone wishing to work on that amp pick up the "The Seeburg SHP Amplifiers" book by the late, Tony Miller (available from AJ-and VG)--For those of you that have it, there is a serious error on page 39 --change both "g" and "h" to read "collector" NOT, "emitter"------ (or you may go "nuts" attempting to get it to work !)
