New vista rca 1964

by Radiofan1 » Tue Apr 29, 2014 3:46 am

Hi All
let me start by saying Im a newb here and will probably ask the same questions all others have asked so please forgive me. I have been a fan of old radios since I was a kid. I love these old console stereos. Its a nostalgia thing for me plus I love the way they sound and tge way the dial glows when they are turned on. My mother played her Elvis records on them when I was a kid on sunday mornings. Well a year ago I aquired a Rca New Vista stereo for free! My neighbor was moving and couldnt take it with her so I took it off her hands. The cabinet is immaculate. Even has the tags from where it was bought from. One problem.. The right side speakers are real low. If I turn the balance all the way I can barely hear it. Everything els works great! Turntable works as well. Its not the speakers tested them. Amplifyer is separate from radio chassis. Its an old tube model radio inside. I belive from reading on line a bad capacitor is to blame? Is this correct? How do i identify the bad one and replace? Need help! if I cant get it working soon wife wants it out! thanks

Assuming this IS a "new vista" console from 1964, during that time they used a hybrid chassis combination.
The tuner would be tubes, but the amp used transistors.
Not knowing the model number or chassis, I can only speculate on things, but for sure it'll need restoration now.
Using it in its present condition is foolish, and can lead to more serious failures, costing much more than if serviced right now.
Provide a model number and an "RSxxx" amp number at least, then I can comment further.

Hi all
Hi Matt
here are the numbers you were asking about Rs2110a and rva274 Both numbers on amp. Also another set of numbers on the right side of amp looking at amp 64145. the serial number of the unit itself is 1537606. Matt tech or anyone else know what these number mean on amp and serial number.?

First off, serial numbers are absolutely meaningless for servicing these things.

That said, the VFT85 is a hybrid model with a tube tuner chassis RC1215.
The amp is a RS210, solid state chassis.

Discontinue powering that thing up in its condition until suitable servicing is done to it.
It's now 50 years old, and overdue for work.
The output transistors - if blown - are 20-30 bucks each, and must be replaced in pairs.
The capacitors in those also go bad - the thing needs a thorough overhaul/restoration.
I've done enough of them to know.
The tube tuner is not exempt from work, either.
Your next step is to locate a reputable local tech that knows these sets well.
Including the record changer.
Once it's restored properly, it'll provide decades more of incredible music.

Hi all
Just wanted to give an update here
I know you are all going to think I'm crazy but with the help of a friend of mine I got the radio working. We bypassed the amp with a new amplifier. Hooked it up and now both speakers work! Best of all I can plug my IPhone into it and play music form there or any mp3 player. Turntable sounds amazing! My wife thought I was playing a cd and when I told her it was a record she was amazed.
