Stereo balance on Wurlitzer 2504

by wingnut049 » Fri Mar 20, 2015 4:13 pm

Now that I drilled out the lock and can get into the back of the jukebox we come to my most annoying issue. Keeping in mind that the seller told me that the amp was rebuilt sometime in the past, I don't get any sound from the left speaker (standing in front) unless I jiggle the volume key. Can I, simply, just have the volume control changed out or should I consider having the amp gone through and rebuilt? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Question--why did you "drill" the lock--if no one has changed it, "service keys" are available ??
If you can "get sound"by "jiggling the volume key", this indicates a (hopefully) dirty volume control, or a "shot" volume control.
If it were mine, I would purchase an expensive can of Deoxit 5, and squirt it into the control--follow directions on can, for best results !

As far as checking if it has been rebuilt, slide the amp back and take a shot of the circuit board and the underside. Post it and we can tell you if the parts have been replaced at any recent time. Do not slide it back too far as it can fall forward and damage a tube.

The amp must be totally stable in performance as it heats up. If the sound changes (weaker-distorted) it points to leaky capacitors and that -must- be dealt with or damage will occur.

The mechanism must also be properly lubricated.
