Magnavox 2P3763 HELP please!

by bettyfordcynic » Wed Aug 20, 2014 7:16 pm

I just bought Magnavox 2P3763, run #4, pecan, and I am having a had time figuring out what stylus to buy for it, or what year it was made. I have researched as much as I can with no luck. It is in wonderful condition. I have a newer stand-alone player hooked up to it so I can play records in the meantime. I am very new to this. Any help would be great!

First off... I like your log on name.
As far as the stylus goes, you can check with Gary at http://thevoiceofmusic.com/.. You should also post pictures. It makes it easier to help you out if we know what were dealing with. As it has been said many time on here your set is going to require a complete restoration if it is expected to work reliably and safely in the future. Wonderful condition is nice but it is no guarantee of safety or future performance.
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.

Indeed, the terms "Pristine", "Flawless", "Mint", "Gorgeous", and the like, are used by people that have only observed the "outside" cabinet and/or cosmetic condition.

It has absolutely NO bearing on the internal components and their "electronic" condition.
It's almost as IF people "expect" or take for granted that because the outside looks "nice" that the guts are also in great shape.

WRONG!

I've got a "beautiful" 1965 RCA Victor model VGT61W in my shop for restoration right now.
You know the one, a danish-modern almost 6 foot long monster with the concave curved front, and louvered grilles - the Mid-Century-Modern style highly in-demand right now.

But the entire guts are deteriorated, as usual, after 49 years.
Transistors damaged, likely due to failing capacitors, and several out-of-tolerance resistors throughout the chassis.
Corrosion, cadnium dust everywhere (a hazzard) and tarnished switches.
The record changer was putzed with sometime in the past - missing springs, missing critical hardware, damaged tonearm wiring, and a melted phono cartridge because someone didn't know how to do a proper repair job.

Of course it will leave my shop singing again in all its glory.
But do understand that just because the outside condition might be pretty, it's just like a person - beauty is only "skin deep".

Get it restored properly - or you'll only be dissapointed later.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

On the other hand--
The last jukebox I restored, looks like crap, IMHO, but now operates like a champ--customer is going to do the cosmetic restoration himself, when he gets it to his home--(this was an eBay purchase !) Ron Rich
