Correct wiring of Audio Output Transformer AMI Continental 2 and Amplifier Output balance

by Tommy50 » Thu Jan 14, 2016 11:58 pm

Hi,
I have an AMI Continental 2 200 Selections with the R-2622 Stereo Control Amplifier and the R-2620 Stereo Power Amplifier.
My Speaker Dividing Network is the L-2722B with L-2718 Woofer, L2719 Right Left Speakers and the H-5041 Tweeter.
Not sure if this combination was standard with later AMI Conti 2?
Since I seem to have a mix of (Conti 2) Speakers and Dividing Network, connected to Power Amp of the AMI Model L.
Now I was wondering, what is the proper connection and of the Audio Output Transfomer Strips to the Speaker Dividing Network?
Why are the wiring Midrange to Left and Right channel (Stereo Round)? Difference to other wiring?
Also what is the proper speaker Polarities on the other side of the Dividing Network?

In the Model L user Manual there are 2 different wirings:
Stereo Round
- Woofer and Tweeter ==> E2 Right CH and E2 Left CH (Polariry?)
- Midrange Left ==> E6 Right CH and E1 Left CH (Polarity?)
- Midrange Right ==> E6 Left CH and E1 Right CH (Polarity)

Other wiring is:
Woofer and Tweeter ==> E6 Right CH and E6 Left CH
- Midrange Left ==> E2+ Left CH and E4- Left CH
- Midrange Right ==> E4+ Right CH and E2- Right CH

While in the Conti 2 user Manual same Speaker Dividing Network, but different Control Amp R-2020 / Power Amp R-2777:
Stereo Round
- Woofer and Tweeter ==> E3 Right CH and E3 Left CH (Polarity)
- Midrange Left ==> E5- Right CH and E2+ Left CH
- Midrange Right ==> E5+ Left CH and E2- Right CH

Additionaly Question is, if the volume on Left and right Channel are different and can hardly be adjusted with the Balance Potmeter, could this be due to uneven Tubes i.e should I try with a new set of tubes or could it be Capacitors or so? Any hints wher to start measuring. I have all equipment.

Thank you for any Clarification.

Tommy, I've owned both Continental 1&2 so I'll try to answer some of your questions:

- Woofer and Tweeter ==> E2 Right CH and E2 Left CH (Polariry?)

Polarity (phasing) doesn't really matter here in that there is only one, two way speaker involved and the sides are designed to be slightly out of phase (approx 45°) both with each other and the center.

This schematic shows the relationship with the speakers and the connector:

Additionaly Question is, if the volume on Left and right Channel are different and can hardly be adjusted with the Balance Potmeter, could this be due to uneven Tubes i.e should I try with a new set of tubes or could it be Capacitors or so? Any hints wher to start measuring.

If the amp has not been rebuilt (new caps and testing plate resistors) that is where to start.

When properly rebuilt the balance control becomes unnecessary as both channels should then track withing 1-2 db across the range of the volume control. On that last point, those old pots will frequently deviate in curves so the balance will shift a bit at various points of rotation. It should be be really noticeable though. My approach is to measure the signal presented to the pot and if that is balanced, i decide if the pot can be accepted as-is or be replaced. On these models it is a simple 5K untapped and that is easy to find.

Thank you for your fast reply Rob.

I already checked the wiring diagram F10570-A that you sent. But I am missing the wiring in fo between the Audio Output Transformers and the L-2722B Input side.
Additionally I saw a note in a Forum: L-2722B Speaker Dividing Network ==> For Speaker Connections use Chart F10571-D only.

Thank you for any help.

Regards,
Tom
