Rock-Ola 1422

by juke46 » Sat Sep 17, 2016 2:06 pm

I am finally working on a Rockola 1422 that we plan to give to a nephew (ain't got no more room here after that huge Seeburg V you all helped with was brought in). I am having trouble with the selector assembly. When a selection is made and the Turntable Cam and Lift Assembly begins it rotation as normal, the Selector Slide Shaft Assembly fails to drop to find the selected coil (selector Key) so as the cycle continues a record tray is not brought out of the tray stack.

If I wiggle or give the Selector Slide Shaft a "wiggle" at just the right time it will drop and the proper tray is selected as it should be. The assembly has been cleaned and lubed and had been working properly until I erred. I had an instance when the tonearm micro-switch adjustment was incorrect and the mechanism jammed forcing me to back it up by hand. Perhaps something was bent in that episode of my own making.

The manual gives a good explanation of the workings but I haven't figured this thing out yet. Just thought someone might have an idea before I start taking things apart. Other Rock-Olas with the 20 selection mechanism have never given me a problem; clean em, lube em, adjust em and off they go.

OK, Got the selector shaft going up and down as smooth as can be. After more cleaning and polishing the associated moving parts the shaft still would bind near the top limit of its travel More wondering and finally found one of the rails or guides that the moving parts ride on had a slight warp or bend, just a tiny, itty, bitty one. Could not actually see it but using a strong small stick as a lever to move those guides, just a tiny bit, found the problem easily. Straightened out the offending side, carefully, a bit at a time and now the shaft travels up and down the full range of its movement perfectly. Shudda thought a that a lot sooner.
