Seeburg Cancel Circuit

Hi All

Just got the Seeburg G operating somewhat. Have had it playing about 2 hours total time. This time when I powered it up and listened to several selections I noticed smoke and shut it down. It appears the cancel solenoid and pop meter became energized for some unknown reason and both became hot. Is there a contact that is dirty and causing this, and if so which contact controls this circuit? Thanks in advance for any info you can offer.

It also appears that I shut it down in time to prevent and damage as after manually tripping the mech the cancel circuit was not energized improperly and the mech and cancel circuit worked properly.

Darrell,
If I understand you the "Pin Cancel" and the "Pop meter" circuits, were affected--these are controlled by the S -SC, contacts. I recommend fusing this circuit ( in the common line) with a 1/4 amp slow blow fuse--BUT contact adjustment-- MUST BE-- "perfect" first ! ( see your friend, Manual, for proper adjustment procedure) Before re-adjusting them, be sure that the screws holding the contact set are snug--do not over-tighten them as the screw(s), WILL snap-- Ron Rich

I'm suprised that no one else has answered this question.

Darrell, there are two most likely causes here:

1) Mis-adjusted contacts in the mechanism. Both the vertical and horizontal stacks are involved here. On the vertical stack it is the set of three blades with a short one in the middle. On the horizontal stack there are two that open momentarily as the trip lever is pulled up. This is to prevent cancelling and pop meter firing again when the mech heads back to scan mode.

2) Intermittent short to ground in a coil or associated wiring. Since Seeburg switches on the ground return, there is always power available in the coils. So, a short from the coil winding to the bobbin core etc will power that coil. Since both cancel and pop meter are in parallel a fault of this sort in one coil can cause both to energize.

Did you notice where the smoke came from? If it came from the mechanism itself I'd suspect arcing contacts in one stack.

Uh, I see that in the time i composed my response The Oracle has arrived. :-)

BTW: In addition to Ron's suggestion of fusing the coils in the mech, I suggest a 3A/Slo at the 25VAC source from the main transformer. That has saved the situation three times when pop meter, credit and scan coils have shorted. Make troubleshooting a bit easier too.

Rob & Ron

Thanks for the excellent advice including where to add extra fuse protection. The smoke I noticed was coming from the cancel solenoid.
