Soundesign Stereo

by mjcjazz » Mon Sep 11, 2006 10:43 pm

I am searching for a Soundesign stereo from the 80's. Stereo has a turntable, AM/FM receiver, double cassette player/recorder and 8-track player/recorder.

Did you ever find this stereo system. I have one that I am looking to get rid of but it does not have an 8-track player. System is still in excellent condition.

No stereos made in the 1980s have 8-track players. They disappeared in the late 70s.

Actually there were still a few low-end stereos like the Sound Design that still had 8-track players in the early 80's and tapes were still being made also. I had a neighbor who bought a new Sound Design component rack system in 1982 because she had a collection of 8-track tapes and wanted a decent sounding system to play them on. These kinds of stereos still show up commonly in thrift stores very cheaply, I'll be on the lookout if you're still wanting one.

Yeah, I would go the Thrift Store route. We have a thrift store out here that routinely puts stuff like that out in their fenced "bone yard." I've seen several out there in all the elements going to waste. I picked up a huge Astro-Sonic console with TV for five bucks. Of course, they stripped out the speakers and crossover but left everything else intact. I just tell them what I'm willing to pay and the back attendant takes the cash right on the spot.

I have a unit out in the garage. There's some junk stacked in front of it and I couldn't see any make or model on it and can't turn it around to see the back. I unwillingly inherited it when an old man gave me a few hundred R&B and Jazz/Blues LP's.

It has a Garard turntable, an AM/FM reciever and 8-track on the face plate, and it is a discreet 4-channel unit with that "Joy" toggle stick on the face. Oh, and tinted dust cover over the turntable. I'll try to check it out this weekend. --BB
