AP-1 some records...

by James_Douglas » Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:27 am

Hi all,

On my AP-1 I just stuck a two records in. This is a c.1980's RCA Big Band compellation. My AP-1 pulls them and spits them right back out. I have tried about 4 other, older, records and they work just fine.

I just got it into place 2 stories up. Ron came by and did some work on it. I ran a couple of records singularly over the last week and it worked great. I am planning on loading it up, but I plan on waiting until I can figure out if this is something I have to deal with or something just affecting a few records.

I have looked over these two records and I can see no difference. About the only thing different is that these two seem a little "floppier" than the others.

Has anyone {Ron :-)} ever seen this behavior?

Thanks, James

I'm not familiar with these models but, do they have a 'no record reject' set of contacts. 1970s-80s RCA records were much thinner than most other labels. If the clamp arm has a set of contacts to reject when no record is present they could be set too close.

Hi James,
As Rob said--the "no record/mis-clamped record switch", is the cause--that's the one up on the clamp arm that had been "fooled with", when I was there--simply adjust the inner blade for slightly more gap, if the record was properly clamped. I adjusted it for the one record we had at the time--If the record(s) are being mis-clamped, it's doing it's job, and the clamp arm itself, may have problems ! Ron Rich

Hi Guys, I suspected that but wanted those with vastly more experience to advise before I started to play with those adjustments. Once I get the study cleaned up, it is a mess, and can roll the unit back away from the wall, I will adjust with the offending record in place.

I will swing back and advise on my success or failure!

Thanks, James
