ROWE R-84 FULL VOLUME

by ELAM BUDMORE » Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:49 am

Hello
Im a newbie here and with jukeboxes please help. I recently picked up a R-84 juke that the volume plays only wide open. tests in the manuel/catalog indicate to replace the preamp board. internet searches led me to several message boards indicating the problem could be 2 light bulbs on the preamp board,i found these bulbs, if they were making contact, they arnt any more, i touched one and it fell right off, the other seems to be making parcial contact .. do these really have someting to do with the volume? how so? ron rich?? you had some responces to these posts saying to use 2 bulbs in a series to replace them... another fella said you could use a mini x-mas bulb, does that really work? how does one go about "glueing" these to the board? on a follow up, after the one bulb fell off the unit seems to have lost its base level or something...or maybe like one of the chanels or something any ideas?
also... i have the field service manuel.....i have seen some referances to some sort of a shop manuel....something that is more so geared to in shop type repairs... is there such a thing that may be viewed or down loaded on line?

Hi,
Yes those lamps are the volume control circuit--you say you have seen a follow up ? I know that someone posted the correct lamp number--I use two 2182's in series to replace each original--and yes, solder then glue them to the PCB. Ron Rich

thanks Ron
the follow up i seen was by someone saying that he was told by a long time AMI repair tech that they in thier shop used the mini xmas lighs (removed from thier sockets and then glued to the board). im not sure if that was on this message board or elsewhere? i think it was by jukeman?? what type of glue would i use to glue the bulbs to the board?

"bathtub" glue, or any rubber glue works--but they must be soldered FIRST ! Ron Rich

Ok Ron thanks
i was wondering about sodering first. So is the glue to guard against vibration or something? Do you know why they would use a light bulb for this? or what the bulb does?

Yep, they "vibrate" enough that after thirty, or so years, they bust off--
Unknown as to why they used that circuit--probably "cheap"--

Because the original was a 26-7 volt lamp, and 2182' s are 14 volt--
Where are you? I have them in stock--

Hi Ron,

The ones I use are 28 volts and have heavy duty leads that do not require gluing down, as you say the orginal were poor and because of there construction they would not sit very well on the board in most cases the leads rot off where they go into the lamp.

I will be in contact.

Alan

thanks Ron and Alan
Ron i am in wisconsin, i had been to the local radio shack type store and they were asking what watt the 2182's were and i wasnt sure. i work in the automotive field, and have access to some differant bulbs, so do you think if i find something in the 24-28 volt range that they would work if they had the right type of pins? Ron what does the 7 refer to in the original 26-7 bulb? also how would i go about getting some from you if i cant find local?
thanks again

The 2182's look exactly the same as the ones you have --the 26-7 referred to the voltage--I was not sure what the exact voltage was on the originals--Alan answered that---28 volts. Any good electronics store SHOULD have them or 2182D 's--same thing, thicker lead wires.
PM me, or contact me off list i you wish to purchase them from me--

Hi Ron..
I got the bulbs you recomended #2182D I soldered one lead of each together in series and then the remaining leads in each of the spots where the originals had been. as far as the volume control jumper, i believe it is set corectly, you are talking about where the 2 volume leads connect on top of the cardboard amp box or cover right? they are connected in the box labeled along the lines of "mono side" ? or something to that effect..(im not there to look at it) but printed on the cover it gives you 2 choices where to put that shorting bar. and it is on the one for non external control. i have also picked up a R-86 that the volume control on the back works fine, and i have the R-84 control wired the same way. if i disconect one of the volume leads at the cardboard cover, i have no volume. do you know if the pcb in the R-86 could be pluged into the amp assy of the R-84 for testing? i know the amp assymblies plug into the jukeboxes differantly ... are ther any other known problems to volume control that can be checked out? also.. im assuming that you should be able to turn the vol. right down to nothing with the knob on the back of the box?? is that a correct assumption?
thanks

The 2182's wired that way have always worked for me--sounds like something else has failed on that pre-amp---
Yes-- am speaking of the "shorting bar" located on the box cover--must not be on "Dual".
Did you just get this phono ? -- or was it working, and just failed ?
Did you check the control itself--should be 10k
Don't know if pre-amps are interchangeable--speaking of which--is the correct jumper installed on the "bad" pre-amp ?
Yes--control should turn volume all the way up/down--
