Columbia Grafonola Speed Control

by JoeNewberry » Wed May 05, 2010 7:27 pm

I have a Columbia Grafonola D2. About 10 years ago I disassembled it without taking pictures of the work, and I was never able to get the Start and Speed controls back together exactly right. Since I'm in the midst of a cleaning and regreasing, I figure it's a good time to finally try to resolve this problem. The parts involved are:

* "Stop plate" that the Start lever's spring loaded arm is supposed to press against
* Governor flange (Arm with felt pads that's supposed to press against the governor disc)
* Speed lever with set screw in the middle and bent arm on the end
* A washer that will fit inside either the speed lever or the governor flange
* A screw with a slightly fat section at the top that fits perfectly into the speed lever or the governor flange

I've uploaded several pictures of the parts and the section of the motor where they go to this gallery (you can click on the images to see much larger versions, by the way):

Here is one possible configuration I've tried, which doesn't seem to work:

If you think you can help me put this back together correctly I'd really appreciate it. If you need more pictures of any part, let me know and I'll be happy to oblige. Most configurations I've tried seem to make the speed control lever feel too loose, which makes me wonder if I'm missing a piece somewhere. That screw with the weird head is also a puzzle. The part of it that fits perfectly inside the lever or the felt arm is off center, so it's like the screw has to be put in a particular position to work right.

If anyone has this same motor or a similar one and could post a picture of what their speed control looks like, I could probably figure it out from that. Thanks.

Hi Joe:

I've never owned a Columbia model, but hopefully, someone who does will chime in shortly with some good photos. In the meantime, have you tried getting in touch with some of the phono repair companies? Many are very helpful, such as George at Victrola Doctor -- http://www.victroladoctor.com/

Good Luck.

Okay, Joe, here's some assistance at last - I'm sorry it's taken so long but I've only just now opened my machine up to take any photographs of it.

Yours is a slightly different model motor to mine, as my speed control runs down through the board and the top of the motor, whereas yours seems to come off from the side; for this reason it won't be quite as simple a matter as simply copying the assembly, but hopefully it'll help to some degree even so. One thing that struck me looking at the configuration you posted is, have you tried turning the part on the bottom left to a different angle? The way it is it looks as though it might be interfering with the governor when it spins.

Incidentally, you're not the Youtube user known as nwajoe by any chance, are you? If so, hopefully this response may be redundant! ...Actually, I see that you must be - your name is there on another video. Love the old NWA stuff! Sadly I've never played Fire Pro. Good to see I'm not the only gramophone and wrestling fan...
