RCA V225 phonograph/radio

by Rod3926 » Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:12 am

I'm looking for information on the RCA V225 phonograph/radio. This model plays both sides of a record and deposits it in a box after playing. I believe it was built around 1940-42? Thanks.

Look for it in these posts.

But you will have a lot of trouble finding one. They were made for only a couple of months. RCA had just released them about a month before the US entered World War II. Then Roosevelt commandeered most of the factories in the US for the war.

Something else happened that made sure the V225 would never be made again. Manufacturers had to make records out of cheaper materials, because shellac was needed for the war, and Japan had captured all of the sources of shellac. So records were made out of various mixes of recycled records, cardboard, glass, glue, sawdust and asphalt. The knife type and throwoff changers started breaking these new records instead of changing them. V225 had both the knives and the throwoff devices.

The same thing happened with the Garrard RC-100 two-side changer. Most of the produced units were in a shipment sunk by a German submarine. Fewer than 10 are known to exist.

If you want a two-side changer, here are some models that might be more plentiful:

- Lincoln (And Fisher-Lincoln). These were made from the later 1920s to the mid 1960s. The later models had 3 speeds, and all of them handle odd sized records.

- Capehart turnover changer

- Markel Duo Playmaster (there are probably more of these than anything else)

- Thorens CD-50 (but it might be 50 Hz)

I found another crude trick to get my Collaro Conquest to play an entire album in one loading: have two copies of the album.
